MJ Hardman on the move

Jan 21, 2011 07:38

I've spoken at length with Dr. MJ Hardman during the last couple of days. She now has a name for the damn-near fatal "event" that put her in the hospital. It was a bilateral pulmonary embolic shower. Hundreds of blood clots formed in her lungs. One clot is enough to kill a person.

MJ rode her beloved industrial-grade trike this week. On the flat, and not for very long, but she did it. Outside. Much better than being what she calls "tethered" to an oxygen tank in her home. The road ahead is long, she says, but she may eventually recover part of the strength and mobility she lost when she almost lost her life. She's sad about missed trips. She won't be at WisCon this year. She's not going to Hawai'i in February; to my optimistic "Maybe next year," MJ responded that she doesn't expect now that she'll ever get to go. She's over 80. She's thinking about retiring as a Professor of Linguistics.

Thinking of retiring. I believe that sums it up.

I want her to be able to hit Hawai'i running, or at least pedaling fast.
