Bert and I had planned on hitching a ride to Germany onboard a C17 this summer. The plan was to rent a car so we could roadtrip through Germany, Belgium, France and England. Then, I got pregnant! There's no way we were going to hop to Germany in the cargo bay of a C-17 with a newborn, so we came up with an alternate plan. The alternate plan: St Croix, US Virgin Islands. St Croix has been a joke between Bert and I for the last two (or so) years. One summer, he was sent on a mission into South America. The entire crew overnighted in St Croix. I still remember it vividly. I was tooling around in Merchantville, NJ with some co-workers when I got a picture text message from Bert. It was of a palm tree, sparkling waters, and it had this caption: "the view from my hotel room!!"
I remember how I felt instantly jealous, not because he was somewhere nice for a change (as opposed to the long list of countries he's visited in the Middle East), but because I love traveling and there I was, stuck just ten minutes north of Camden, NJ. Still, it wouldn't have become a joke if Bert hadn't cut our nightly phone call short--to about five minutes--in order to go party on a yacht with some of "the guys." It was a "Jimmy Buffett" party, after all (as he blithely explained to me). Hahaha, I was furious! For once, he was somewhere that had a phone connection and he chose to party with the guys in paradise? Worse: I was stuck in NJ, minding house?! I'm pretty sure Jen got an earful that night, while I waited to have some kind of connection with Bert again. Anyway, that was the day I started keeping a list of all the places he went on Air Force business that we would someday visit, together.
On the list: St Croix, Germany, Spain, and Turkey.
St Croix felt like the natural choice when we started re-planning this year's vacation to accommodate the pregnancy. So, we eventually used my Christmas bonus to reserve a room at the Villa Greenleaf (
http://www.villagreenleaf.com/index.html) and off we went. It was probably the best vacation I've ever taken. The location was beautiful, the island was relaxing, and it was just downright FUN. But in all honesty, it was just nice to have time away from home--away from homework, work work, taking care of the kitties, and dealing with people--so that all I had to do was spend time with Bert and get caught up on some of my fun reading. :)
