I remember Kim Woo Joo from old Xman (Korean variety show) episodes but I never kept up with his career. Then in December, I downloaded his latest Beautiful Day single and was surprised to hear that his voice is significantly higher-pitched compared to his first album. I think he sounds better. Watch the PV. By the way, does anyone know why he's so fluent in Japanese? A lot more than most other Korean artists I've heard of.

This song is in this rotation because of my friend Candice's influence (she loves M.I.A). I love Paper Planes not only because it has the mesmerizing sound of guns in the chorus (shooting and reloading), but also because it has a strong message about youth & violence, drugs, and the American obsession with money. It's an absolutely incredible song.

This is quite a famous and influential band in Beijing. They're insanely creative and energetic. Listen to Bye Bye Disco before watching the PV. It's one of their many WTF?!?-inducing music videos which you either end up getting used to or falling in love with (they just love to dance, don't they). The song itself is a catchy disco-y tune with that longing feeling. My favorite part is towards the end.. I dunno, it's just so magical.

This time, watch the PV first. It's a simple and common song subject but they still manage to make it undeniably tragic. The song does an excellent job of capturing that feeling of being tossed aside.

Doesn't the lead singer look and act a lot like Tom Delonge? Or maybe that's just me. Unfortunately, Huaer is rather infamous for its plagiarism. However I continue to listen to them because they have that interesting Chinese pop-punk flair that they add to their songs. This one is one of their slower-paced ballads.

If you're into bands like Be Your Own Pet and Tilly & The Wall, you're in the realm of Giant Drag: unusual but elegant indie. All their songs involve touchy subjects (look up YFLMD for example) that very few bands like to sing about. Kevin is Gay is their most popular song and I've actually seen it on a Death Note fanmix 2 years ago to represent Misa. It's an infectious song about an obsessive relationship. You get the sense that the girl is completely aware of what she is getting into. If the meowing at the end doesn't get to you, you must've missed the whole point Annie is trying to get across. Also, I swear that's a Street Fighter reference in the beginning. Watch the MV.
