yesterday I was not, today I am. yesterday I was, today I am not.

One week ago at this time, I was at my desk downtown drinking bourbon from a plastic cup. I had a bottle of it in the office saved for a special occasion, but the occasion turned out to be my unemployment. That morning's meeting was very glum, as about 1/4 of the participants would not see another one. The merger had failed, and with it our jobs. ( Read more... )

If you need any advice about applying for unemployment, let us know. Not that we are experts, but we've learned a little bit along the way. We got approved for more than we were expecting, so that's nice.

Congratulations on the engagement :) Very exciting!

I applied last week while I was still working, so should I claim this week next Sunday or last week today? That part wasn't clear. The safe thing would be to claim only this week but I don't want to miss a payment in there by being late.

And thanks :)

Claim last week but report your earnings. Otherwise you have to refile. You've got until the end of Friday. Then on Sunday you can claim for this week. At least that's what I was told...

I'm going with this one cause I've heard it from 3 people now. Thanks!

Claim this week next Sunday, but you might not be eligible right away because there is some kind of waiting period built in for that first week. At least that's the reason they gave us for not paying us any $$ for our first week unemployed. But it's good to file anyway, it doesn't hurt anything and it gets you used to the system.

They'll send you a job search log, so make sure to be keeping track of all the jobs you apply to. You have to have at least 3 job contacts per week, which isn't all that hard thanks to the internet.

Lukas went to the WorkSource office in Shelton, but they were pretty much worthless, and I am sure they wouldn't be able to help you.

Are you going to try and stick around the Seattle area, or head down to Portland, or go anywhere you can find a good job?

I'm sticking to Seattle, as that's where my contacts are and so is most of the work.
