There are certain rules Time Lords have that they never, ever break.

There are certain rules the Doctor has that he never, ever breaks.

There are certain rules that are meant to be broken anyway.

He goes back. When he's finally realized what has happened (and what hasn't), when he's coherent enough to sort all of the information out, when he's focused enough to put the plan in motion, he goes back.

There's something about the way his thoughts race that makes him think he was very close to figuring a way out of it all, a better way out.

When he fails, he goes back again.

There's something about the way he knows he shouldn't that makes him push the TARDIS faster.

He goes back again.

There's something about the way the planet burns too brightly and too hotly that compels him.

He goes back again.

There's something about the sound of furious war raging around him that draws him in.

The TARDIS refuses to allow him to take another trip back, despite his yelling, despite his need, despite his urge, despite his beating against unresponsive controls. Even his ship has had enough of his rule breaking, even if it breaks them.

There are certain rules the Doctor has that he never, ever breaks.

This isn't one of them.
