CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Okuzaki Akira
Canon: Mai-HiME
Point taken from canon: Episode 26, Shining ☆ Days - just before the Obsidian Lord is defeated
Previous Game: This one! Mostly in its beta stage.
Age: 13-14
Gender: Akira is biologically female, which is an intrinsic part of his HiME abilities. However, he dresses as male and even refers to himself as ‘ore’, since he was raised as a boy from a small age. Akira chose to fight in the final battle in his boy’s school uniform in spite of all the other HiMe knowing the situation, so it is my interpretation that Akira currently prefers to be treated as male and is not comfortable with his female body. I will be referring to Akira in the masculine unless character development takes him in a different direction - this will also help to upkeep Akira’s IC presentation as male.
Preferred Village: Mizusato

Appearance: Akira is a perfect ninja in a small package: stocky, lean and muscular, with excellent balance, speed and reflexes. Though physically female, Akira binds his chest and dresses in male clothes, covering as much of himself as possible, even going so far as to wearing a turtleneck under the summer school uniform. He also uses gruff, hyper-masculine speech, and tends to be standoffish, even cranky and dismissive.

These less-than-attractive mannerisms have not detracted from the attention and admiration of the girls in his class. Akira’s features have a handsome, androgynous quality and look quite a bit more classically Japanese than the average person in Mai HiME. His dark green hair is very straight, kept chin-length throughout, with short bangs in the front, long bags framing his face and a long ponytail. His eyes are reddish-brown, and his eyebrows keep a very sharp shape and impression.

His ‘secret ninja’ outfit consists several tight-fitting purple pieces (something like shorts and a turtleneck) beneath a loose, short black tunic tied with an obi-like purple and yellow sash with a star design in the center. His legs are kept bare in favor of purple stockings and small black shoes. This outfit allows Akira to move quickly and freely, and is what he wears to fight.

Akira bears a mark on his right shoulder that looks a little like a circular star. This is the mark of the HiMe and its presence signifies his powers are active.

Canon Background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_Okuzaki

Game Background: Akira arrived to Kannagara deeply disturbed by the losses of his abilitites, his Child and his dearest person, Takumi. In the months he spent adjusting to his life without his powers as a HiME, he accepted Iruka as his teacher and pledged his loyalty to Konoha since Kakashi had shown him kindness and regard like he had never seen. He began to accept the idea of not fighting alone, and of having team-mates. He was slaughtered by Deidara in the war, which only strengthened his resolve to improve as a ninja.

Canon Personality: In spite of being a well-trained and disciplined warrior, Akira can a rather emotional person. It's not entirely visible at first because he's not at all cheerful. When he's in a good mood, he presents it with a dry sense of humor and lots of carefree teasing. However, in spite of having a rather dutiful, serious nature, when it comes to his own shortcomings and feelings of affection, he's prone to tears and acting extremely. Akira is also easily embarrassed at times and that impedes his judgment. When Takumi recognized him even in his ninja getup, he got so flustered he gave himself further away. He often has temperamental outbursts paired with physical appraisal - anger him and you'll probably get punched or put in a headlock, at least if you're a guy.

Overall, Akira is still very young and throws himself into whatever he's doing 100%, whether it's the art he studies or the young man he's fallen for. He is deeply aware of his obligations and is intensely loyal.

Personality Game Development (Optional): Having learned to accept others as his comrades, Akira has shrugged off the yoke of his father’s rules - though this is a change that also came in time due to his decision to remain with Takumi and to fight with the other HiME in the end. He is much more independent, but overall is still the same stubborn, headstrong person, just not as reliant on his father nor as tortured by the decisions in raising him  that defined most of his life.

Due to the help of his friends in his new setting, Akira successfully overcame the mental instability that accompanied the loss of Takumi and his Child, which has given a great deal of personal strength and increased his faith in others.

Abilities/Strengths: He's skillful with kunai and shuriken and extremely adept at stealth, climbing and jumping. He's extremely nimble and fast. He has good pain endurance and enough medical knowledge to dress his own wounds.

Akira's skills in hand-to-hand aren't directly illustrated in Mai HiME since combat revolved around the use of Elements and Childs - and Akira only fights visibly in a few battles. While it seems that Akira's focus is on stealth and surprise attacks, he is seen lifting weights and also has a punching bag in his room, which suggests that he fine tunes his body for hand-to-hand as well. Considering he was raised in a clan of ninjas to someday fight in and win the HiME Matsuri, it makes sense to assume he was well-trained in hand-to-hand even if it wasn't his focus. When it comes to barehanded or melee combat, Akira is an expert but not at a master's level. He sustained an injury in one of his battles, so he's not a totally perfect fighter.

On the mental and emotional side, Akira takes orders very well and has a very strong sense of duty, as well as right and wrong. In spite of being somewhat alienated from his peers, he's the type that defers to authority and respects it. He gives his all to everything he does and is fiercely loyal. His bluntness and humor are some of his other good qualities, but they also work against him at times.

Perhaps contrary to his rather straightforward, aggressive nature, Akira is a very talented artist. Even at the middle school level he's considered the art teacher's prized student. He's seen making professional-level sketches and paintings.

As a HiME, Akira can summon his Child from another dimension - a mechanized monster creature that resembles a frog, named Gennai. Akira has accepted his Child, which means it will fight for him and obey him, however, if his Child dies, his most precious person, Takumi, will die, so he only risks Gennai’s life when it’s absolutely necessary. Gennai is the size of a small house,     and is able to blind enemies with the giant spotlights on its back, allowing Akira to "pin" the enemy's shadow the ground and allow Gennai to execute its Jigoku Gama (literally "Hell Toad") attack, which involves Gennai launching a huge spiked ball out of its mouth towards the enemy.

Weaknesses: When it comes to combat, Akira avoids conflict and confrontation any time he can, even when it might be to his detriment, as in his last battle. Considering what was at stake, it's unsurprising Akira would want to keep Gennai out of harm's way, but he allowed his emotional attachment to Takumi as well as his fear over losing him influence his tactics.

In general, as a personal weakness, Akira's far too easily swayed by anger, embarrassment and love, and is plagued by deep inner conflict. Then again, Akira is a young teenager and that's pretty par for the course, ninja or not.

He's not a major team player, and in general prefers to work and live alone. It takes him quite some time to warm up to people. He has a tendency to be cold and acerbic as a distancing technique, and his tendency to get competitive with and teasingly insult people he likes could easily be seen as a bad quality.

Defining Quote(s):

I wonder, why did we meet? My family seems to have been connected to the HiME battles for generations. That’s why my father made me hide that I’m a woman. Sometimes I wonder, if I were really a guy, would we have a more sincere, deeper relationship? If I weren’t a HiME would I have met you? I wonder, why am I a woman? Why am I a HiME? Why have I fallen in love with you?
(Mai HiME Special 19)

Other: It is my headcanon, developed in Akira’s previous stint in this game, that Akira’s father installed shame and discomfort of others, as well as his own body and sexuality, by sexually abusing him.

Action Writing Sample: [So here’s Akira. Dark red eyes size up the camera. One thin eyebrow raises, and he clears his throat.]

So. This place again, huh? That’s great. Just great.

[And he glares at the screen, now, as if the Hitomi is responsible for this predicament.]

Not that it really matters - but if any of you out there remember me from my time before - message me back, okay? I want to know how long I’ve been gone.

Third Person Writing Sample: "Takumi..."

Akira woke moaning, with his belly flat to the ground. Before he even opened his eyes he realized he wasn't in pain. The ground was much softer than he remembered it being. It was light. The air smelled sweet and calm, absent of the sharp smells of metal and ozone that accompanied HiME battles. He was not where he was when he lost consciousness.

He opened his eyes and stood up carefully. His body was as it had been. His hair was perfectly tied back. The sarashi still bound his chest tightly. There wasn't so much as a rip in his stockings or frayed bit on his sleeves.

This place was beautiful. Deserted aside from the storybook animals fluttering about, cooing and doing other suspiciously innocuous things. Akira listened carefully for the sounds of humans or threatening animals, a particular rustling, a snapped branch. No footprints around here.

It was like some strange park. Or Heaven. Akira couldn't help but think that Takumi would love it here. He'd pack a fancy lunch for them both. They could sit under that tree on a blanket... shit.

Takumi was gone and it was all his fault. The grief was enough to cause him pain, make him dizzy. Failure. Failure to protect Takumi, failure to complete the task he was raised to do. Only moments ago, Gennai was destroyed. Takumi had called for him. Takumi was running. Takumi was made of green light. And then it was all over. Nothing but darkness.

He hated this new place, so made of light. He hated how his heart wanted to stay in that state of calm. Nothing was so simple. He had no memory of being brought here, and the injuries he sustained in his last battle weren't life-threatening. Either he was wrong about his wounds and this was the afterlife, or someone had messed with his sense of time.

A terrible thought struck him. Could this be the future of the Obsidian Lord? Had Mai and the others failed to keep the HiME star from falling? Whatever the case, best to proceed with caution.

He had no weapons. Attempting to call his Element only caused another wave of grief. He was a HiME no longer. What a wonderful and horrible thing. If this was some illusion, some changed reality, he would have to count on his hands and his training to survive.

Akira hopped, grabbed a branch and swung up into the trees, claiming a balanced perched as he gazed across the forest.

It wasn't safe to stay in one place if this was the world renewed by the Obsidian Lord. Akira knew that. Further, it felt like he needed to be somewhere. That instinct was as good a starting point as any.

Akira felt a strange peace and confidence as he glided in the green-gold light of the trees. This was familiar. This is what he knew how to do. He headed South East toward an unknown destination.

If he fought and died, it was a better ending than he deserved.
