Five Facts About James T. Kirk

Apr 14, 2010 19:50

So nix_this had a meme-type thing on her journal which basically involved writing down five things from your personal head-canon for Nu!Kirk. I was intrigued, and found myself unable to resist stealing it and trying my own hand--someone please stop me before I do one for Spock, or Holmes and Watson.

Without further ado:

1) Jim has never even been close to being in love, except for second year at the Academy when he couldn't admit it even to himself and spent all his free time getting drunk and fucking anything that would stand still. Bones knew anyway, and the kindest thing he's ever done is never mention it to the man he's never been able to see as anything but an irritating and much-loved little brother.

2) The smell of engine grease and overheated electrical circuits reminds Jim of his mom, who still calls herself a greasemonkey when she's in a good mood and once snuck nine-year-old Jimmy onto the Saugeen when it was in dry-dock to give him a tour of the engines Winona had spent the last eight months working on. Three hours later Jimmy had slipped in an oily puddle and was coated all down his left side, his hands were covered in stinging little nicks and one rather painful electrical burn on his right palm, and his head ached from straining to see in badly-lit access tubes. He had never been so happy. Winona left two days later for another year-long tour, but the Engineering department still makes Jim smile when nothing else can.

3) Jim has had a stuttering, awed crush on Number One ever since he met her in Pike's office in first year and completely failed to be suave. Pike never passes up an opportunity to mention it, the bastard.

4) He's not afraid of spiders or crazy Romulans or tentacled ice-monsters from the frozen wastelands of hell, but tribbles freak him the hell out. It's just not normal to be born pregnant and brainless and so freaking happy all the time, and he woke up half the Enterprise swearing in Klingon at the top of his lungs when he dreamed he was turning into one.

5) It's about three weeks into the Enterprise's first voyage with Jim as the official captain when he first hears music drifting through the wall his cabin shares with Spock's. Half an hour later his paperwork is abandoned on the desk as he leans against the bulkhead between them and listens to a Vulcan instrument he doesn't know the name of give voice to what Jim is certain is his First Officer's grief. Spock plays at least once a week after that, and Jim tries hard not to think about the fact that even second year at the Academy never felt like this as he sits against the wall and holds vigil for a woman he never knew.

If anyone else sees this, feel free to pick your favourite character of any fandom and spread it around--I'd love to see what comes up.
