The Things We Do For Love
The Doctor pushed the doors of the great hall open, his leather coat slung over his shoulder. He smirked as he walked through the entryway and saw people gathered on the stage, singing weakly. His eyes scanned the hall until he found who he was looking for, seated at a table along the edge of the hall, blocked by a person on each side, stuck.
He strode purposefully up to the table and caught her eyes. The smile she gave him was soft, but he saw the twinkle of amusement and love in her eyes. “Nobody puts Rose in a corner.”
A few hours later, in bed cuddling, he'd tell her that it had been very difficult to say that line and keep a straight face. She'd smile and kiss him, and thank him very much for a very special birthday present.
And then they danced, although it seemed like he did most of it. They'd practiced for a long time in the two months since he informed her of what, exactly, he'd be getting her for her birthday this year.
They were both too old for something so fanciful, but it was her favorite movie to drag out on movie date night - had been since he'd first picked her up all those years ago - and it was exactly the right kind of present to get the woman who had everything she wanted at her fingertips. Besides, dancing together was as much a part of their relationship as movie night. And she already knew all the moves by heart.
And the words to every song. She surprised him now, a gentle smile on her face, as she looked up and sang the words to him. “Now I've... had... the time of my life...”
Thete grinned and finished the line for her, pulling her body close to his as they swayed, “And I owe it all to you...”
“Thank you, Thete,” she'd say. “That was a lovely birthday present. No,” her eyes would twinkle and she'd nip playfully at his ear. “It was fantastic.”
Notes: This was inspired by two things: first, the player of Rose and I establishing this sort of ongoing movie night idea for them, and Dirty Dancing 's integral role in that movie night. Second, I saw the 20th anniversary re-release in the theaters tonight.
