Weekly TV roundup

Donna: smart, empathetic, and awesome (check)
Ten: annoying, smug, and bug-eyed (check)*
guest star: perky, blonde, and unrealistic (AKA Mary Sue) (check)**
script: trite, preachy, and predictable (check)***

*one decent half-scene does not a performance make, and in fact only infuriates me more; just as he gets bearable, the script goes to crap.

**Georgia Moffett is cute as she can possibly be (she's really the best mix of her parents, and looks a lot more like her mother than her father). Jenny could have been a lot more irritating than she turns out to be, but still, she's a cliché wrapped in a worn-out trope wrapped in a paper-thin script.

***Martha's storyline was utterly useless; realistic emotional perspective missing throughout except for Donna, and perhaps that's just Catherine Tate being brilliant.

Random: Nigel Terry continues to get sexier as he gets older. (Sooo much better than as Prince John!)

Verdict: Donna, as ever and always, rocks. I think I'm going to rewatch this series with my thumb on FF.

All this glaring at each other is getting a bit wearing. Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff are compelling presences (TH is much prettier with the honey-blonde hair), but where are we going, really? I feel like I've lost the thread of the plot, or maybe they have.

Roslin's storyline was an interesting counterpoint - I do think there's a balancing that's nice about small, human stories juxtaposed against the SF elements. She and Adama continue to form a surprisingly tender relationship.

BSG fandom must have been asquee with the Six/Six kiss.

The music analysis program? Please. People have been running that for ages. Doesn't work. Was slightly amused by Larry's little head-wiggle to the beat.

The stories continue to be uninteresting this year. But I don't know if that's an inherent problem of the stories. In S1 - y'know, back when the show was good - the stories weren't all that great, but they were handled in a way that made us care about the development of the characters around them. I think that's still the balance that they're hitting, except that the character development has pretty much stopped. Unless we count Don's descent into macho creep.

Charlie's meeting of the in-laws - utterly predictable, in a way, but amusingly awkward nonetheless. Amita was being a bit thick, there, wasn't she? I don't know, this whole thing could be handled better, particularly the resolution. And the continued lack of chemistry between Amita and Charlie means that...just not caring. I wish I could. Sincerely.

Charlie's ride-along is undoubtedly fic-fodder. DK actually looked cute this episode. The haircut helped, and maybe a bit less stubble? One thing that struck me is that he seems to be standing up straighter. Maybe he's doing yoga!

Holding pattern this week, overall.
