Summer and autumn collide

Over the weekend, I noticed the leaves of some trees were just starting to turn colour, with a few branches tipped with oranges and reds. This morning, I just caught my first TV commercial for winter tires. A bit early, surely, although it has turned very grey and gloomy today and the temperature have dropped significantly from a gloriously sunny weekend.

Records were broken again this weekend with the sunny temperatures. Not too hot, given that is September, just really fantastic for getting out. There were plenty of people at the beaches, I'm sure. Andy and I went to the Davie Day street festival on Davie Street. Bumped into Heather and Kent and had lunch (brunch for them) together. Highlights for me was walking through the community garden (allotment) and seeing some live demo of horses being shoed (huge shire horses!). I do love the many street festivals that we've had through the summer at different locations in the city. This is likely the last one of this year with the end of summer. Andy then went for Saturday Circus at the art gallery while I window shopped and read at a cafe.

Church on Sunday. After which we had lunch downtown and watched the movie 9 (not District 9). It caught our attention with Tim Burton as one of the producers and we love his stuff. There has been surprising little publicity for the film where we are. Some mention on the local news but no posters being plastered through the city or on buses. We saw the trailer on a rental DVD and made a note to watch it. It is quite a short film at just under 80 minutes. It was actually an animated short made by a film school student for his masters project and subsequently nominated for best animated short film at the 2004 Academy Awards. That must have been what caught people's attention and got the funding for a feature length film.

The visuals are fantastic and very evocative. Great effects, fantastic sound and themes. I guess if I have any quibbles with it, I felt that it is a little too short and could have benefitted from having a bit more time to develop the backstory and flesh out some of the characters more. Still, a good watch and worth the tickets.
