Its been a busy few days. Friday night I went out to a club to see a band. My professora´s boyfriend new them so we got in for free. After the show I went with Elliot and his friend Paquetta (sp?) to some private club that you have to be on list to get into, it really was not all that exciting.
I got home at about 5am and Junior woke me up promptly at 7:30 to eat breakfast with him. I then went back to bed for most of the day before wondering the central market.
On Saturday, the Colegio Militar de Manaus, which is right across the street from where I live had a big celebration with fireworks and everything which was pretty neat, even though I was still exhausted. On Sunday, I woke up and went to breakfast with my host family in the Mercardo which is this really gorgeous place built by the British by the port. After that, I went to the grandmother´s house. Someone in the family got a hairstraightener, after they were all obsessed with mine, so we spent the afternoon having a chuhasco with delicious food and straightening everyone´s hair (guys not excluded.) Depois, we went swimming in this tiny pool at the language school that my host dad owns. It was a lot of fun. I played peixes e tublerones (sharks and whales) with the little kids. That night, I went with the mother, Junior, his 8yr old cousin Ike, and his cousin Samuel who is about my age to the teatro. At night they have concerts and old fashioned movies which Id seen when I ran. They also have chess, and toys, and stilts for the little kids to play with, face painters, and for 5rais for 30min little kids can rent powerwheels to ride around the plaza. It was wicked cute.
On Monday, I went to Sao Jorge with Elliot to check out the neighborhood he lives in. Sao Jorge is very diferent from the centro. We chilled their and I had lunch with his host family before we went with Marcia, one of the profs, and Mike to see Superman. It wasnt dubbed, but it did have Portuguese subtitles and it was half price day for students. I wasnt that impressed with the ending.
Yesterday, Denise had an emergencia at her other job, so we had class at 2. Before that Marcia took us to the hairdresser and Elliot and I cut our hair. I realized how little Portuguese I understand still when I somehow agreed to let the guy curl out the ends of my hair all Farah Faucet, Charlie´s Angels 60´s style. It was kinda funny. The cut is really good though, so once I brushed it out I was happy.
Ive been having some really freaky dreams lately. Some scarry, some happy, some just wicked strange but all of them incredibly vivid and intense. I dont know if its the medicine Im taking or just being in a new place. Ive also started to notice that Im now thinking in Portuguese when i run even though Im still having trouble speaking it.
Yesterday, it finally hit me that Im really LIVING here. This is not a temporary arrangement. I have already been here almost 3wks and Ive still got more than 5months to go. I feel like being here I is hopefully going to change me for the better. I feel like Im going to grow up a lot and gain a different perspective. Its strange how different and yet how similar and comfartable life is here. I guess thats the point of inter-cambio.
Im kinda freaking out at the moment because I just realized that I have 2days to go register with the Federal Police..oops. Oh well....plenty of time.
