3wks from today I will be in Rio de Janeiro!!!! Exciting shit. Today Marcia taught class. She is such a sweetheart. After class we went to her house and her mother made the most incredible launch.. befe, shrimp, this local fish dish and a delicious desert. Marcia is a duel citizen. Her dad is American, he and her uncle having spent time in both the US and Brasil growing up. Her dad is from Lexington, KY and has a wicked accent. She went to school in Texas for a while as a kid and did a year in college in KY so the whole fam has a southern drawl, except for the mom who is quite clearly Brazilian.
After lunch and arguing about politics in the middle east while watching CNN (surprising how little things change regardless of where in the world I am) we continued to experiment with the Brazilian obsession with absurdly cheap beauty procedures. Elliot got both a manicure and a pedicure and Mike, who had already gotten his fingers done went for the feet. I went with Marcia while she got her hair cut and the two of us went to another place and had one of Brasil´s more famous beauty procedures done..
Tomorrow is Friday, which means its field trip day!! It also means we have our first test which I should probably be studying for right now. Portuguese is sooo much easier to read and write than to speak tho so I willbe fine. Speaking is still a pain in the ass. So many years of spanish get me tounge tied when the same exact word is pronounced completely differently. Ive come to the realization tho that there are sooo many cognates I need to stop concentrating on learning words and just focus on being able to say things like a Brasileira.
In other news, I desperately need new running shoes, but those are one of the things that are ridiculously expensive here (250-500rais, 125 to 250dollars) so Im going to have to order some online and then try to have my brother send him to me because most companies wont ship to Brasil. That also means that I wont be able to get them until Rio because mail to Manuas takes 2wks and wont get here on time.
I really need to find out my address when I get to Rio. I dont know anything about whats going on. The guys are really starting to stress and get aggrivated about the lack of organization of the program. They dont even have plane tickets yet. Elliot is contemplating either switching places with Mike or demanding to go to Rio any ways even if Mike wont stay here. The cost of living here is MUCH higher than Rio because it is so remote and the research opportunities are not shaping up to be as great as was promised. Who knows what will happen. Im just here to have fun and experience another culture. (YAY! for not being an econ major.)
Ive been wondering a lot lately how everyone is doing back home. We heard that there has been killer heat (literally) in the north east. I hope all is well..
And YAY! for Adam Hockensmith. He is going to be a wicked sweet YD pres. I just hope he doesnt burn out.
