Okay, I know I'm probably going to sound insulting or irrelevant or both, but this is kind of a huge pet peeve of mine so I'll just spit it out anyway: a fair amount of this Latin is incorrect or, um, kind of nonsensical. I usually ignore it, since I know most people don't lose sleep over a misused dative (especially Bones and Jim), but it seems like a relatively big part of the fic, which otherwise I very much enjoyed (McCoy's icon in particular cracked me up). So, er, I guess I'm asking whether you'd be open to suggestions for changing the Latin? If not, no big, but for future reference there are many lame classicists ready to invest a good deal of energy into going over Latin for fic. :-)
I really did like the fic! I love it when Bones isn’t a total prude before Jim debauches him. The box under the bed made me blush. And Calvin is like the bastard love child of Jim and Bones to me - Jim’s excitability and ego and Bones’ pure grumpiness. I also love it when a action is described indirectly (e.g. through conversation), so all the little comments about where Bones’ hands were made me lol. Weirdly, enough, I also like that Jim uses completely correct grammar/capitalization whereas Bones forgoes it. You might think it would be the opposite, but I like what it implies about them: Jim is not as carefree as he seems, and Bones isn’t always completely anal.
Anyway, some Latin. Here’s what I’ve got: 1. fututor does mean “fucker,” but it’s not really in a cursing sense, and applies only to male/female sex. The typical word for “fucker” is irrumator, which means “facefucker.” 2. nullus -- minime is traditionally used as “no,” although the Romans weren’t really into “yes” and “no.” 3. braccae tuae aperiuntur -- bracae
( ... )
Thank you so much for those suggestions. I just need to drag my fellow author out of the Bureau of Communications forms and we shall make the right adjustments.
Oh Bones most definitely isn't a total prude. We have another IM fic that we will post soonish, ;), where more of the intelligence of both the two men and Bones being a bit of a ladies man is on display. I mean they both did 4 years in 3 and also Bones in TOS was one hell of a charmer.
Bones has had to put up with rooming with Jim for nearly 3 years by this time and he knows just how to annoy his room mate right back.
Very observant about their different typing styles in this situation. :) Jim has finished his study and only has to worry about flirting/annoying Bones while Bones is trying to read and deal with Jim who is consistently IMing him from 2 ft away! He's a little short with him and like any good doctor, spelling and grammar can just bugger right off in order to get his point across.
Believe me, these are incredibly fun to write. As my beloved co-conspirator said, there is another one of these written, and I'm sure there will be more in the future. ;)
