Maybe your old man is a real jerk, but you gotta give the guy a
break... parenthood is fucking difficult. I was fortunate enough to
have two examples of what it means to be a father. One, who was willing
to make a personal sacrifice to provide for me and my mother, and to
help show me what it means to love a child unconditionally... and
another, who's only redeeming quality (genetics aside) must have been
the decency and good sense to limit his involvement in my life to a
greeting card on birthdays and X-mas.
Every father has a role to play, and even men who are "fathers" on
paper only can teach you about yourself, and the importance of healthy
role models for our children.
So for every young man who knows what it means to sever ties with your
past, in order to embrace your child’s future, for every man who turns
his back, because he doesn't know what it means to be willing to die
for someone who can't even speak yet, for every father-to-be who's
paralyzed with fear when confronted with the enormous responsibility of
parenthood, but accepts his role eagerly, and for the men AND women who
are teaching our children what it means to be healthy adults...
Happy Father's Day...
So even if you dislike the old bastard, but respect YOURSELF, call him
up and thank him for helping to make you who you are today... because
fatherhood is underrated.
