More interesting/relevant(?) news stories...

Oct 31, 2005 23:56

This was originally intended to be an entry (well, before that, some hyperlinks that I was going to send to jamesalastair, actually), but for one reason or another never made it to the full 'ready to be posted' state...

To start with, an interesting couple of stories on Westminster:

- Westminster blog. See esp. entry of 26th October

- 'Parliament cleaners strike again'. Unfortunately not quite as exciting as the headline makes out...

Now for events over across the pond ...
(NB: I hesitate to call C&C's visit there an 'event')
- Rosa Parks honoured. And yes, I am using the British spelling. Deliberately. It's the BBC after all!

I just thought this was EXTREMELY interesting/a big contrast to all the other stuff going on in the States right now... The statistics mentioned in that story tell for themselves how much of an honour it is to lie in state at the Capitol!

- Bush picks conservative as SC nominee. Worrying, if nothing else. Especially if you read all the background stuff on it - and even more so if you consider that he'd lost his previous nominee, a moderate woman, mainly due to twin pressures of hard-right and some Democrats...

- Lewis Libby indicted: analysis. The dominant news story of last weekend, apparently...

Some interesting BBC Online Magazine articles:

* Some Suggestions on Use of Sarcasm

* Languages 'get lost in translation'

* New Passions for Pumpkins, since it's Halloween, after all!

* an interesting article about Education now and back then...

Happy reading ;)
