Had to take Mandarin to see the vet.

Again.

On Saturday evening, I'd noticed that he seemed to be squinting his right eye a bit. I figured maybe he had a hair in his eye - after all, he's covered in fur - and it would work its way out.

Sunday, he was even more squinty, and now was closing his right eye more than his left. We scooped him up and took a look at his eye, but didn't see anything. He continued being squinky (squinty + winky = squinky) for the rest of the day, in addition to staying under the bed. It seemed that bright light bothered him more, because he seemed to be a little better once night fell. Other than that, though, he was acting fairly normal. Eating, drinking, peeing, pooping, chewing on his sister, playing with his favorite hair tie, etc.

Monday morning he was still squinky, so I figured there's no sense in taking a chance with his health and called the vet. Amazingly they managed to get me an appointment in half an hour with Dr. Stapleton, who helped me before when he had a minor upper respiratory infection.

After a struggle to get Mander into his carrier, which resulted in a pretty serious scratch to my wrist, we got to Saint Joe Center Veterinary and settled down in a room.

Typically Mandarin is quite the little explorer. Even when he had his cold, he was poking his nose in all the corners and hopping into the sink. This time he huddled behind me on the bench and stayed there.

When Dr. Stapleton came in, the first thing he said was "That's not like him."

No, it wasn't. At all. After a preliminary exam, Dr. Stapleton scooped up Mander and took him into the back to stain his eye and see if there were any ulcers, which is supposedly a complication of feline herpes.

Thankfully, there were no ulcers. I've heard that they can be a pain in the tail to treat. He did have some minor irritation in his eye, so he gave me some antibiotic to squeeze into his eye twice a day - and boy does he love that - and some eyedrops for both eyes. And he's back on his lysine, just in case.

Poor little squinky Mander. Thankfully today he seems to be doing better - I haven't noticed him wink at all yet, and he's only squinting his eye just a smidge. It's almost completely back to normal.
