CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Elliot Nightray
Canon: Pandora Hearts
Point taken from canon: Right at the end of chapter 50, when Break accuses him of being the Headhunter.
Age: 16
Gender: Male

Appearance: The most noticeable feature of Elliot’s is his hair. Its colour is nothing special; a light brown that almost borders on blond (plenty of images have coloured it as blond, but it is brown), but on the right side of Elliot’s head right where the parting is it sticks out in a quite remarkable cowlick. Other than that and fairly strong eyes with a blue-grey colour, there is nothing special about him, though. He’s not very tall or short, standing at 172 cm, and has an average build. He wears a school uniform… while in school, obviously, and there’s is also his noble clothing, because he is after all the only alive son (by blood) of a noble family.

He carries himself as such too, and fitting his ego; proudly with a straight back and his chin held high. He generally doesn’t do much with his body, the exception being when he’s angry (which he is often, really), where he does tend to flail every now and then and lean forward, along with pointing at people. He usually keeps his hands neatly at his sides, occasionally keeps a hand on the hilt of his sword.

Background: Right here. It’s… not horrible but not great either.

Personality: It probably has plenty to do with his upbringing and society status; Elliot has an ego. He really does think highly of himself a lot because of his family name. Although when looking closely, it almost seems that most of the ego has to do with the family itself more than him as a person. He speaks plenty of the honour and reputation of the Nightrays, not so much that it gets obnoxious or repetitive, but whenever he feels that it’s needed.

Such as when scolding Gilbert or generally trying to put people in their place.

But of course, since he is a Nightray, feeling proud of his family name goes back to him, so he definitely sees himself as someone big. And the Nightrays are nobles, after all, so it’s not far-fetched or anything, quite justifiable.

Along with this comes how he views his sword. It’s a proof of acknowledgement of him being a Nightray, or something along that line, so he’s quite possessive of it.

To back up his ego, or maybe not so much as it kind of makes him look ridiculous, he’s very loud. He doesn’t have a horribly foul mouth or anything, he’s actually fairly well-mannered, everything considering, since he grew up in a noble household. But he is really, truly loud. That coupled with his short temper means he easily snaps and yells enough for… pretty much everyone in the manga. Of course, different things piss him off on different levels, and some things don’t make him look ridiculous at all and in fact rather impressive, like when he faced enemies far above him and said that there was no way he was going to die, and later on called Oz out on being ready to sacrifice his life for anyone else no matter what effect it would have on his friends.

Having a short fuse doesn’t at all mean he can’t be calm and rational, however. It’s just… a little rare, but he is very much capable of it and quite intelligent. He can think of ideas for tricky situations and figure out things if he has a few bits and pieces to base it off. When he really has to, he does stay calm and keeps a clear head. The fact that his temper doesn’t last all that long helps with this as well; you may manage to anger him, but if something comes up the flares quickly die down.

But they can just as quickly go back to life. It’s one big roller coaster, really.

In the end, there aren’t many things that really, honestly anger him. You can tell when he’s really angry; that’s when he starts really talking, and really cornering you to make you listen to him and realise that you’re being stupid. Then again, it’s not only those things that make him really talk either; he pushes his opinions onto others a lot, comes with being loud. If he has a strong opinion on something, he will voice it, loudly and surely. And he won’t be satisfied until he has voiced it all.

He tends to calm down afterwards, though, and he can generally accept other opinions depending on what the subject is. Getting a reason for a certain opinion or behaviour usually makes him back off, as long as he figures it’s reasonable. He likes to get explanations for things so he can understand them, otherwise he just think it’s idiotic and he will make sure that’s known.

That’s not to say he doesn’t at all start voicing his opinions just for the sake of doing so and pushing them onto people. But there comes a time where he stops because he thinks he has gotten his point across just fine.

If not an explanation, he always starts serious arguments and debates because he wants to hear something or get some form of result (probably not decided from the beginning, however, and mostly just when it comes). Once that happens he drops it, quickly, but is more than happy to continue if the other part insists on doing so. He’s very protective of his own values and opinions so if they’re still questioned he’ll keep explaining/protecting them. He’s very stubborn and won’t give up; dropping a debate or argument after getting what he wants doesn’t count as giving up, neither does falling back when it means to keep living.

He has a very strong “always fight to live” mentality, so obviously self-sacrifice pisses him off. No matter what it means, he thinks that to live on you should do whatever it takes. It doesn’t matter if giving up your life will protect someone else, because it will hurt those you care about and you should never let that happen. No matter what, you should always aim towards living on. If doing so makes you look like a fool, fine. It’s worth it in the end because allowing yourself to die is cowardly and an easy way out. It’s not that he thinks letting yourself die is something that’s done easily, but he doesn’t think it’s an option you should ever consider.

This has most likely formed from the fact that all his three brothers were killed and hurt his family greatly. He knows the consequences of someone dying can have on the people that love you and he think it’s nothing but a weight. It’s not that he blames his brothers for it, he could never do that because it’s definitely not their fault, but of course he wishes it didn’t have to end up that way. He doesn’t linger on it too much, though, and just tries to do the best of the current situation. That is; pull through and learn from it. He thinks of them every now and then and misses them, but that’s it.

About his family; he holds them very dearly, which probably grew even stronger after all of his brothers died. And anyone with the name Nightray equals family, no matter if it’s by blood or not. Even when Elliot was told not to care about Vincent or Gilbert because they’re just adopted and thus not real Nightrays, plus that Vincent has a red eye (which equals bad luck), and things like that, he still did. He thought they were family and didn’t understand why he should ignore them, so he didn’t.

He has always been the kind of person who first and foremost thinks individually and puts great value in his personal opinion.

Despite how the Nightrays are, the reputation of traitors they have and how other people may look at them, Elliot is very proud to be one. Everything it means and everything he’s told it means he takes to heart. As much as it may be seen, in some ways, as listening to things blindly that doesn’t mean he does; he’s fully capable of changing opinions that his family gave him if it turns out it’s wrong. He doesn’t start thinking that it was wrong, but he’s someone who forms personal opinions from his own experiences and not just word. He trusts his family and for their words to be true, but he can dismiss it for something else if, in his opinion, need be.

He thinks very highly of his friends as well and puts them on the same level as his family. The few true friends he does have, that is. There are few people he becomes friends with because they require that they’re different from most in general. He counts friends as those that he can confide in and trust fully without having to worry about them going behind his back or treating him in a special way because he’s a noble. He enjoys being treated like a normal human being despite his pride in his name because then he feels surer that they’re not faking. He wants to be treated by people as they treat those who aren’t of noble descent, because then they can be trusted, and for example won’t talk crap behind his back.

He has been called a “gentle person”, which he doesn’t approve of at all. Because he’s tough, honest! But no, really, he is gentle in a way, but he also is tough, and a bit of an idiot as Leo has said. He’s forceful, but that’s a lot because he cares on a deep level, which makes him gentle. He is a truly caring person, with strong opinions that he voices loudly without a care of the situation or what the consequences may be.

Stupid, but most of the time, he does succeed to get something across. They can result in motivational speeches as well, and he’s definitely not bad at those.

With the recent chapter, though, it’s safe to say that, even if unconsciously, Leo is the most important person in Elliot’s life. Elliot isn’t the kind to see someone above anyone else, even if one is a family member and one is just a friend, but the Chain in him has a deep connection to Leo and if anything threatens his existence, the Chain will make Elliot kill whoever does, no matter who they are. This would never be a choice of his, but there’s nothing he can do about it. So technically, it would make Leo the most important person to him.

Abilities/Strengths: Up until the latest chapter, Elliot was written as being a normal human, but it turns out he is in fact an illegal contractor of a Chain. A Chain is a creation of Abyss (an alternate dimension that the manga has shown as a vast wasteland but that some claim to be a paradise that they need to go to) and can take on any shape and have any kind of power, and they need a contractor to be able to stay outside of the Abyss for a longer time. Why they want this is generally because they want to eat humans, but there are special ones that have other purposes.

Elliot’s Chain, Humpty Dumpty, needs to be close to the soul of Glen Baskerville because it was created from Glen’s body and thus they have a bond, and that’s why it needs to stay outside of Abyss; to protect Glen’s new body (in this case Leo) and reassure his reincarnation or something.

Humpty Dumpty is capable of doing damage if needed, but mostly it uses the contractor’s body. Its contractor goes by the name of Headhunter because the murdered people’s heads were cut off (by its tongue or something like that). This is, though, only a way for Elliot to be able to blame it on someone else instead of himself, because Humpty Dumpty erases its contractor’s painful memories. The fact that Elliot was the one that killed his family is definitely a painful memory, so Humpty Dumpty erases it, as well as making Elliot blind to the fact that he had a seal on his chest, something every illegal contractor has.

Humpty Dumpty will make Elliot do anything needed to protect Glen’s vessel.

Its last known ability is that it can make copies of itself, so several people can contract with it and the burden of the contraction is split up. This way, the limited time illegal contractors have to live is prolonged (the seal is a countdown of this time, and when it runs out, the contractor is cast into the Abyss along with the Chain).

If you could actually call it Elliot’s abilities is debatable, but the Chain is a part of him so it’s close enough. Aside from this, he’s a skilled swordfighter and is very capable of holding his ground even against those who are aware of and use their Chains.

Aside from being a skilled swordfighter, he’s a composer as well, and a good one. This is one thing he and Leo bonded over, because Leo is one as well and they usually compose together. They play the songs on piano.

Elliot’s not the kind to stick to things until the very end if he knows he doesn’t actually stand a chance, which is definitely a good thing. He’s aware of his limits, so when he understood that his opponents were above his level, he retreated. When it comes to serious battles, he knows how to keep his calm and if he does lose his temper for a brief moment, he’ll regain it quickly.

The fact that he thinks you should fight towards living no matter what if you have any pride at all means that he doesn’t care how it looks; he will do whatever he needs to stay alive. To him, doing this means you have pride, no matter if it means you have to run.

He’s stubborn and won’t back down from most things in the first place, always aiming to do his very best no matter the situation.

Weaknesses: Despite having a Chain, he can’t exactly use it because he doesn’t know he has it and as long as Leo doesn’t have to be protected it won’t come out. Therefore, technically, he’s only human even so and doesn’t have any certain abilities aside from the sword fighting.

If it comes down to it, he can’t choose between friends and family. If either of them needs to die for the other to live, he wouldn’t be able to choose, and giving him such an ultimatum is a way to break him. He will, no matter what, try to work out any other way to make sure both of them live because there is no other option in his eyes. He will not choose.

Even if he has fairly good control of himself, everything considering, his pride can get the better of him. It’s fairly rare in a serious situation where it will do harm more than just make him look stupid, but it can happen.

Having a temper means he’s rash, and while he generally has a pretty good idea of what he’s doing that normally comes after he’s jumped into something. He doesn’t really think things through before doing them, so he’ll attack stronger enemies without a thought and realise afterwards that, oh, maybe he can’t really fight them. His pride plays a part in all this too.

Of course, despite that he’s capable of controlling his temper he can lose it too. No matter how briefly it is, enemies can definitely take advantage of this.

He is a complete brat when it comes down to it, really. There are a few people capable of cooling him down when he gets going, but if they’re not around he can be simply horrible.

He has blackouts occasionally, and that’s usually what signals that Humpty Dumpty might be taking control. It’s usually coupled with flashes of the memories that have been buried, though he can never really make them out. They’re rare, but they happen, and pretty much never mean anything good. If not blackouts, he gets hit by dizziness sometimes.

Defining Quote(s):

Chapter 25, page 14
“You seek opinions from others, and yet you force your thoughts on them when you dislike their answer. Isn’t that it?” ~ Leo to Elliot

Chapter 24, page 42-45
Oz: I don’t want an innocent person to be involved! So… please run away-
Elliot: I TOLD YOU TO SHUT IT, YOU STUPID ASSHOLE! You want me to escape in front of the enemies from before?! I don’t have one single drop of that cowardly blood in me! Listen here! Edgar died protecting his master. I won’t say that his death was useless, but… He said so when he died. “I don’t fear being hurt. I will happily accept my death if I can protect my master”! Praying for the happiness of the people that helped him, and yet he hurt them the most! He should be struggling for life, and resist death! “My weapon is being unafraid of death”? HAH. Don’t make me laugh! Who said it was strong to not fear getting hurt?! Those things are… only what people say who don’t have the awareness of “bearing”. What a joke!! Listen here, people from Baskerville, my name is Elliot! From the four duke houses, Nightray’s legitimate heir! Elliot Nightray!

(Edgar is a character from a book series called “Holy Knight” that both Oz and Elliot are a fan of. They got in an argument over this character when they first met, because Oz loves him while Elliot hates him.)

Chapter 27, page 39-41
“You… Are you an idiot?! Like Leo said, I might not understand your situation… But you, didn’t you notice?! If that’s the case… Compared to back then, you’re already a step ahead! From now on, you will do whatever you like! Do you want to keep moving on, or head backwards, or walk a completely different path… Everything… You can decide on your own!” ~ Elliot

Chapter 40, page 7-
Elliot: Thank you for coming. However that hand shouldn’t be offered to a Nightray, but to your own son over there.
Oz’s dad, Zai: Ha… There’s no need for that… Whatever happens to that thing is none of my business.
Elliot: !! … Stop… Stop joking, you bastard!

Chapter 50, page 33, flashback
“You are what I’ve always been looking for. Someone I can speak to openly. My friend and equal.” ~ Elliot about Leo

Other: He occasionally has dreams of his lost memories.

Action Writing Sample: [The screen shows a brief view of light brown hair, the leaves of the Himorogi tree and the blue sky before a hand covers the Hitomi, and all you can make out is a bit of light and the sound of heavy breathing. For a moment, that’s all that’s heard, but then the breathing stops, and the hand moves to show a bit of sky again.

And then the hand’s owner speaks, the voice weak and shaky.]

W-what…?

[The hand is removed, and you can see a young man, or boy, leaning forward where he’s sitting on the ground, eyes wide in disbelief, but his gaze is distant, and almost a little horrified. He starts breathing again, still deeply, lips parted as he starts shaking lightly.

And then his expression changes, forehead furrowing and teeth gritting, though his eyes stay wide. His hand clenches into a fist as he whips around, looks as if he’s on his way to stand up while his gaze moves around his surroundings rapidly, and he draws in a deep breath.

That comes out as a yell, still shaky, and furious.]

BREAK! XERXES BREAK! What is the meaning of this--?!

[He suddenly drops back down, shaking his head and taking another deep breath, followed by a growl.]

Is this supposed to be FUNNY?! THIS ISN’T THE TIME TO JOKE AROUND, YOU BASTARD, NOT-- After… what you said…

[He trails off, gaping and just staring, as if he only now realises that he’s really not where he’s supposed to be, and he looks around again, more slowly.]

…Gilbert? Xerxes Break? Where--?

[He shifts, inhales deeply, but doesn’t do anything else for a few moments. Before, as if realising something, his hands fly to his collar, and with shaking hands he starts unbuttoning his coat.

And the feed cuts off there.]

Third Person Writing Sample: It’s frustrating.

Honestly, his family’s reluctance almost makes Elliot want to punch them. He doesn’t care what they say, about Leo, about him being “just an orphan” and thus “unfit” for the position as his servant. He doesn’t understand what the big deal is, what’s so bad about it. He doesn’t want anyone else, that’s final and yet…

Yet it doesn’t matter how often he says it, how stubbornly he says it, how he reasons, they still refuse. He knows what he wants and that’s how it will be, he’ll make sure of that because it… it has to be that way. He’s just… not quite sure how to make it that way because nothing he has tried has worked so far and he’s running out of ideas. Knowing he’s going to make that isn’t enough, he’s aware of that, but…

He just doesn’t want it any other way, why can’t the others accept it? He doesn’t want any of those suggestions from his family, he knows they’re not what he’s looking for and they never will be.

It’s… hard to know what to do about it. His hands go still on the piano keys, and he sighs as his normally straight posture slumps, just a little, because he’s getting tired from all the thinking. It’s hard to focus on playing, even while it normally helps him feel better, because the more he thinks about it the more hopeless it seems.

Leo leans forward and peers at him, making a curious hum. “What’s wrong, Elliot?” he asks lightly, almost cheerfully. “You’re not being yourself.”

Frowning, Elliot shakes his head and pulls his hands back to put them on the stool. He really wishes they were sitting at his piano in the Nightray mansion right now, not at the orphanage. They should be sitting at his piano in the mansion, but they’re not, because of his family…

“I’m running out of options… That’s all.”

Leo shrugs and idly plays a simple melody with one hand, smiling lightly. “It’s not a big deal, I don’t have to become your servant, you know.” And his smile grows overly amused as he adds all too cheerfully; “I don’t see why someone like you would have to despair over a dirty little orphan.”

Elliot’s eyebrow twitches and he flails his arms a little, scowling. “Do you really look at me like that?!” he snaps angrily, but calms down immediately and puts one hand back on the piano to join in the playing. The feeling of the smooth keys on his fingertips… is soothing, even if not as much as usual. “Anyway, it might not be a big deal to you but I don’t want any other servant. The fact that nothing I say or do convinces my family is really frustrating. I’m not sure what to do.”

“Wow, the great Elliot Nightray doesn’t know what to do. I didn’t think that was possible.”

Slamming his hand down on the keys, Elliot stands up and leans over Leo, fuming briefly. “ARE YOU QUITE DONE?!” And rapidly sits back down with a frustrated sigh.

Leo can be so incredibly irritating sometimes, especially because he seems to enjoy pushing at his buttons, but… It’s fine, like that.

“Careful with the keys,” the orphan says calmly, gaze focused on Elliot’s hand.

“Ah?”

Elliot blinks at said hand for a moment, before pulling it back rapidly and putting it back on the stool while, as if his outburst never happened, Leo continues playing that melody. He sighs and absently watches those fingers move, racking his brain for any other ideas. Figures Leo wouldn’t think of it as anything important to him, he mostly just wants to see the Nightray mansion’s library or something like that. If only it could be that simple…

But Elliot doesn’t want to make it that simple. It doesn’t matter how long the road will be or how hard it is, Leo will be his servant. And that’s final.

“Well… It’ll work out,” he mutters. “They’ll have to give in eventually.”

“I’ll wait,” Leo says, doesn’t look up from the keys, but he’s smiling.

So Elliot has to smile too. Yes, he knows.

He knows Leo will wait, for however long it takes.
