This is literally a pet peeve of mine.
First off, I have nothing against pit bulls. I think they make really cool pets. I do actually like them. I have friends with them whom I LOVE to visit. I have had a gigantic pittie sit on my lap and be a total love. I am NOT afraid of them, nor do I think they are particularly menacing et. No more than any other dog. It all depends on training, background, etc.
So, around Fairbanks there are many people who love pit bulls. That's pretty cool. BUT anytime someone posts in local online pet groups looking for a dog, regardless of what they are looking for in a dog, people start with the, "GET A PIT BULL! THEY ARE GREAT DOGS!!!" schick. Really. People looking for small dogs, herding dogs, retrievers, etc. Apparently pit bulls or pit mixes do it all up here.
There are also a MASSIVE amount of pit or pit mix litters constantly cropping up everywhere. For a breed the military bases don't actually allow for on post housing, it's insane! Where are they all going!?
Also someone wants a pit bull awareness march this summer. To be honest, as of now around town, all anyone ever hears are people going on about how everyone should have a pit bull. How great they are. How unfair it is that apartments, the bases, and many people with rental houses won't let them there. (Most people renting houses don't want ANY dogs there, since there are so many idiots out there who let their pets tear up the place. Or they don't allow animals over 30lbs, not so much pit specific.)
At least around here I seem to see more people complaining about the "bad rep" their dog gets than people actually saying pit bulls are bad dogs.
Personally I wouldn't ever have one. It isn't a reputation I prefer dogs with long and soft fur. I want to try using it for roving to spin. And it would be nice to have a dog that is somewhat different from the majority around here. I also feel badly for short fur dogs during -40 winters, and would like something suited to train for retrieving.
So yes. I respect pit bulls. I even like them. But pit bull people need to take it down a notch and at least not argue with people who want a different type of dog. We are not saying pits are bad, we are saying we want something else and have our reasons.
