I clearly don't think it's pointless, otherwise I wouldn't have done it. I don't believe that it's the be all and end all but when you find someone you truly love, you may find yourself wanting to declare that love and commitment to each other and in front of people that are important to you. I don't think that that declaration of commitment has to be with a state-sanctioned union or a church-marriage. That's a personal choice and under the law (in Australia at least), if you live together for a couple of years you are deemend a defacto or putative spouse anyway so legally, your position is just the same whether you have that marriage certificate or not. It doesn't have to be with $20 invitations and $5,000 cake. In my opinion, people who go to those lengths are only trying to outdo each other and that isn't what it's all about ( ... )
