By now, all the savvy facebooker’s have discovered the back-story as to why their mom and sister are posting where they like it. With statuses such as “I like it on the floor as soon as I get home” and “I like it on the kitchen counter,” eyebrows were raised and questions were floating around. "What is it all about?" "Aunt Stacy, ew!"
It’s once again about Breast Cancer Awareness in October and getting everyone to discuss and read about it.
Original Message in Facebook Inbox-
About a year ago, we played the game about what color bra you were wearing at the moment? The purpose was to increase awareness of October Breast Cancer Awareness month. It was a tremendous success and we had men wondering for days what was with the colors and it made it to the news. This year's game has to do with your handbag/purse, where we put our handbag the moment we get home for example "I like it on the couch", "kitchen counter", "the dresser" well u get the idea. Just put your answer as your status with nothing more than that; then cut n paste this message and forward to all your FB female friends to their inbox. It doesn't have to be suggestive. The bra game made it to the news. Let's see how powerful we women really are!!! REMEMBER - DO NOT PUT YOUR ANSWER AS A REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE- PUT IT IN YOUR STATUS!!! PASS THIS TO EVERYONE you know!!
October Breast Cancer
Did it work? I suppose so, many people participated, even myself. Just as did last’s years wave of Bra Color Facebook statuses made headlines, so did this year’s.
CBSnews,
Cnn reported it, as well as
MyFox and numerous
internet communities.
However, what really struck me was the backlash against it.
In the twitter and facebook news feeds, there were comments like
i support breast cancer research and awareness but not a trashy pig so i got in a big ass fb status debate earlier, we won and I’m not doing it again.........LADIES: stop posting whorish innuendo statuses about where your bag is YOU ARE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO SUPPORT BREAST CANCER.........go get a mammogram/breast exam and encourage anyone else you know to if you want to spread awareness
look, i get it. october is breast cancer awareness month, i support it, but for the love of god, stop with the "i like it..." facebook statuses... it's not funny, it's not clever, and it's taking up my entire facebook page
for breast cancer in some ass-backwards way, post a link to
http://ww5.komen.org/ instead. Telling the world you "like it hanging from the chandelier" isn't raising any awareness - it's lowering your standards.
Though I did like this modified version- LIKES IT SUPPORTING A CURE FOR BREAST CANCER AND SUPPORTING FREE MAMMOGRAMS @ THEBREASTCANCERSITE.COM. !!!!!!!!!!
And then I saw the comments about how people shouldn’t be wasting time updating status and should be donating money and volunteering instead. Yeah, gee, thanks for generalizing everyone who took part in it. Because that’s right, if someone’s busy spending 7.8 seconds updating a status, there’s no way they could have donated money to someone's research run/walk/cause.
Sex sells. There’s nothing wrong with using it for good, instead of corporate gain. These statuses are a harmless way to bring Breast Cancer into the spotlight. And guess what? It worked. The point is to raise awareness, precisely so that people DO donate and find out more about the disease - including getting proper health checks.
So though the 'secretness' and curiousity of the reason for the suggestive statuses has disapated, do not forget that this is a disease that will kill 10 million women in the next 25 years. About 1,970 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men.
I implore you to
donate to breast cancer research if you can, and/or educate yourself on the
signs and symptoms for diagnose in yourself or a loved one.
