Thanatos heaved an exhausted sigh. He had - once again - been sent by lord Hades to watch over his brazen son. Between two corridors in the Asphodel, the incarnation of Death had heard murmurs speaking of blazing footsteps tracing a way up to the surface. Something in his stomach was swelling, twisting, knotting its way up to his throat. Was Zagreus really going to leave? Why? Without telling him of all people? Thanatos rushed through the realms, trailing behind the fiery steps Zagreus was leaving. He finally caught up to him, his heart racing, his body pulsing, his anger boiling.
“Wait!” he shouted at the running silhouette. “Don’t you dare.”
Zagreus stopped but did not turn his back. Did not want to face the angry figure - because yes, he knew it would be angry - nor the lectures he had done his best to avoid so far.
“What were you thinking exactly? That you could leave unnoticed and escape like a coward? Now turn around and face me. Or else… I cannot guarantee I’ll keep my scythe down.”
The threat could never be clearer. Zagreus could feel the air in threads, tight, moist, suffocating. Even the slightest movement could result in a wound. He carefully rotated on his ankles to look at Thanatos whose face was almost distorted from something that looked painful.
“Hi Than.” he said, sheepishly.
“Hi Than? Is that all? I know for a thing that you are not the most caring being walking these realms Zagreus, but could you please at least look like you’re sorry?”
“Should I be? Would it not have been better for the both of us if I had just walked away? Will I not inflict enough sorrow as it is?”
“So you would rather not see me and leave as a coward. How ironical for one who claims to be the bravest of the Underworld.”
“That’s -”
“Oh I’ve heard you. I won’t try to stop you, worry not. I know exactly what you are now. A runner, unmoved by anything other than himself. With no concern for what you burn, ready to set everything ablaze including yourself just to get what you want. I just hope that someday, you will find something better to do with your scorching flames than this.”
Without waiting for an answer, Thanatos turned his back on the escapist and made his way down to Tartarus. He did not see Zagreus’ hand raising in a silent attempt to hold him back.
Nor did the young prince see the tears welling up in Thanatos’ eyes.
