For no apparent reason I was in the mood for a romantic comedy this evening. Since none of the ones I had really were going to do it and I had a free movie rental from Blockbuster that expired tonight I decided to pick up something I haven't seen. I can spend WAY too long over thinking the decision so I decided that all romantic comedies are about equal, so I would just grab the first one that looked interesting. I got "Imagine Me & You."
I have to say, I really enjoyed it. It was a British romantic comedy with more normal acting people. The movie wasn't filled with one liners and horrible situations that couldn't really happen. Yes it had a few cliche moments, but they didn't seem as painful as when they are pushed to the limits in the American comedies. Also, the two characters falling in love were women.
After watching this it made me realize just how ingrained the "man-gets-the-woman" (or vice versa) plot line is played in romantic comedies and Disney movies*. After some searching on Amazon and their "Top Romantic Comedies" list and "Top Gay/Lesbian Romantic Comedies" it became very apparent there wasn't a great deal of overlap (meaning only "Chasing Amy" and "Victor/Victoria" in the top 100 contemporary romantic comedies).** Given the strange situations that couples from romantic comedies end up in, I don't think it would be any stranger to have two women fall in love as it is a spunky hotel maid and a super rich client. Perhaps progress is being made because there are more gay and lesbian characters on TV and entire series around them. So I'm hopeful that some day that will translate into more movies that have the gay couple as the romantic interest and not just the humorous side couple. Until then, I found some other movies on those Amazon lists that sound interesting.

* Don't get me started on Disney movies only having a happy ending once the male and female fall in love. Seriously, Mulan just saved China, shouldn't that be enough?! But the movie isn't complete until she gets the man?!
** If you extended it to general comedies you could pick up "The Birdcage" and "In & Out" and well... maybe "Chuck & Larry" but that one is pushing it...
