Austria (NOT Australia)

Yep, believe it or not, people get the 2 confused! I saw hilarious T-shirts that had a kangaroo and the words "there are no kangaroos in Austria" on the front! lol

Well, I am sure you are all curious as to how the rest of my trip went. (or maybe not, but I am going to write about it anyway. hehehe) The opera was quiet interesting. We bought standing room tickets (read "cheap") which meant we had to stand in line for a while, but hey, at least I can say I saw my first opera in the Vienna opera house! I don't remember the name of it (obviously wasn't a famous one, lol). I will have to ask Karen if she does. But it was awesome! There were little screens in front of each seat (or standing place in our case) that you could set for "subtitles" in German or English. I set mine for English and the people in front of me had their's on German, so I read over their shoulders & if I didn't understand, I looked at mine, lol!

The next day (Sat) I spent a few more hours in Vienna while Karen & Chris went on to Salzburg. (they had got to Vienna before I did on Thursday) I went to Schloss Schonbrunn, which was the palace of the Habsburg dynasty from the beginning of the 18th century. It was amazing! So much history and splendor! And the gardens around the palace were so beautiful, in full bloom!

I took one more trip around the city (via tram) to see any of the historical building I had missed and then it was to the train station for the 3 hour ride to Salzburg.

I got there a little after 4, which was just enough time to check into my hostel and then head to the old town to see Mozart's "Wohnhaus", the house he lived in as a child. The audio tour there was great and I got to see a couple of the pianos owned by the genius as well as compositions written in his own hand, amongst other interesting items.

Then I stopped off at the Mirabell gardens (where the "Do, Re, Mi" song in "The Sound of Music" was filmed) before it started to rain. :-P

Ahh! I will have to finish this up tomorrow...have to go to German class now!
