Belated Festivid Recs!

Feb 11, 2014 23:20

If you missed it last weekend, I revealed my Caprica festivid (now with notes!) and seekingferret turned out to be the maker of my hilarious Arrested Development giftvid, Tradition.

With over 100 videos, there are SO MANY that I adored. So it's a little late, but I put together a no way extensive list of just some of my favorites that you may want to check out. The post-reveals drawback is that a couple of these are no longer streaming and have to be downloaded - but I promise they are all worth it.

9 to 5 (Lego Star Wars) by eruthros. EVERYTHING IS CUTER AS LEGOS, including Stormtroopers having thankless jobs!

All We Got (The Great Gatsby) by Anoel. Really impressive fast-paced editing and gets across the stunning visuals of the movie and a tone of abundance spiraling toward doom.

Applause (Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23) by elipie. Just PURE FUN starring Chloe and her BFF James Van Der Beek.

Black Flowers (Call the Midwife) by meddow. I've actually never seen this show and yet this vid got me SO invested and moved by one character's story. Love the repetitive editing style that conveys her inner conflict and fears.

The Ballad of Wesley Crusher (Star Trek TNG) by jetpackmonkey. Actually editing this in after the fact because I almost forgot about it. A really well-done and sincere Wesley character study!

Do My Thing (The Heat) by Laura Shapiro. Fun, awesome tribute to this movie that represents both characters and their odd couple dynamic. And not the last Janelle Monae song on this list. :)

Dutch (The Wire) by chaila. A STRINGER BELL VID! An amazingly-edited Stringer Bell vid in all his terribleness and glory!

Feel The Love (Portal) by echan. I really love how the vidder mixed in-game and official footage with fan-made movies, parodies, and crafts, making it a tribute not just to this odd game but the fan-love it inspires. The ending is surprisingly touching!

Helpless (Sleepy Hollow) by trelkez. I haven't watched much of this show and wouldn't expect to take it too "seriously", yet this vid *does* capture a genuine, angsty tone toward Ichabod and I really loved what it did shippy-wise with the love of his past and also Abbie.

How Does It Feel? (Almost Famous) by Joyo. I mentioned at the very beginning on twitter that this was the first festivid that made me cry. It did! A definite watch if you've seen the movie even if (like me) you hadn't thought about it in a while. (Warning: now comes with the unexpected heart-punch of Philip Seymour Hoffman.)

King and Lionheart (Pacific Rim) by violace. A lovely Mako Mori-centric vid, especially in her adoptive father/daughter relationship with Stacker. <3

Lifeforms (Never Let Me Go) by Dayln. Haunting, I really like how this vid weaved together the characters as children and adults.

Love Can Move Mountains (The Muppets) by odessie. From the classic TV show to the movies, THIS WAS THE KERMIT/MUPPETS VID THAT MADE ME CRY. WATCH ITTTT.

L.O.V.E (Much Ado About Nothing - 2013) by purplefringe. From the Joss Whedon 'Much Ado', an adorable Beatrice/Benedick vid that showcases their physical comedy and their Faces. :)

Moves Like Jaeger (Pacific Rim) by Di. OF COURSE THIS HAPPENED. Giant robots fighting monsters. Also Christina Aguilera.

No Church in the Wild (The Tudors) by obsessive24. I never bothered with "The Tudors" but this vid is a technical MARVEL that I basically see as using footage from the show to tell its own story of Henry VIII's war with the church, his wives, his own oncoming death. The juxtaposition of violence and religious imagery, just guh.

Postpone The Bad (Agents of SHIELD) by milly. A very cool Melinda May-centric vid, I really dig its tone and imagery and how it uses her relationships with Ward, Skye, and the 'bus'.

Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down (Top of the Lake) by chaila. Again, this is a vid where I hadn't watched the series and knew NOTHING about the story at first but the characters and themes came through so strongly here. Just incredibly edited with the parallels between these characters, the empathy between this female cop and young rape victim in a world that is less empathetic to either of them.

Sleep No More (Strange Days) by isagel. I never thought I'd be reccing a Strange Days vid because I... just no, with this movie. Yet holy hell did I enjoy this take on it, particularly by focusing on Angela Bassett's character as the real hero of the story. AND MORE JANELLE MONAE, YAY.

Spring Break Anthem (Arrested Development) by lilly-the-kid. Not just funny as hell, but the more I watch this vid, the more I appreciate how brilliantly it pulls off the bait-and-switch nature of this Lonely Island song and actually mirrors the "wait are they really going there? THEY ARE REALLY GOING THERE" GOB storyline in season 4.

Studies in Human Sexual Response: She Bop by Unwoman (Masters of Sex) by eruthros. I actually loved ALL the Masters of Sex vids, even though - broken record at this point - I HAVEN'T WATCHED THAT YET EITHER, I MAY NOT ACTUALLY OWN A TV. I'm only singling this Very NSFW one out because the concept (female masturbation for Science!) and execution of it really entertained me.

Sunrise (Footloose) by littleheaven. It would be so easy to make a cheesy Footloose vid! A cheesy Footloose vid to Duran Duran! But this really connects to the characters in addition to doing awesome ~musicality~ things with the dancey footage and I just love it.

White Chalk (Winter's Bone) by hollywoodgrrl. THIS VID IS SO ATMOSPHERIC AND BEAUTIFUL I CAN'T STAND IT. I'm running out of words, sorry.

Young and Beautiful (The Tudors) by obsessive24. I was going to lump this with the other one of the same fandom and vidder, but giving it its own space because it's so different stylistically. :) This is focused specifically on the wives (divorced, beheaded, died / divorced, beheaded, survived) and I love how their individual stories but also the joint tragedy of them comes through.

In other news, I've been squeeing about this on twitter and tumblr (where I usually am lately) but last night I went to a Battlestar Galactica trivia event in Manhattan, and my team of five (really four as one member was just watching us in amusement) did RIDICULOUSLY, UNGODLY WELL and handily beat the other 9 teams. Much fun was had!
