Metal Time - Wolves!
Here are 6 of my favorite metal songs that pay tribute to that most metal of animals:
1) Killer Wolf - Danzig.
Danzig croons this song like there's no tomorrow. I mean you got to give it up for a metal dude who isn't afraid to warble. His extended woooollfff howl certainly made me weak in the knees, not Danzig's intended effect, I'm sure. But, you know, these things happen when shirtless men yodel sexy metal. The video, like most Danzig videos is mostly black and white and incompre-fucking-hensible. A wolf gives Danzig some kisses and then Danzig, some blonde chick, and a dude with a handle bar mustache just sit around a busted up old shack in rocking chairs. BECAUSE ROCKING CHAIRS ARE FUCKING METAL!
2) Megadeth - She Wolf.
Dave Mustane is a lyrical genius:
"The rite of the praying mantis
Kiss the bones of the enchantress
Spellbound searching through the night
A howling man surrenders the fight"
What the fucking shit - why is the Shewolf a praying Mantis, now?
3)Mastodon - The Wolf is Loose
The wolf is loose and evil and killing.
"Shapeshifter rolling on winds of tyrants make
Fierce lore of fanged horn
Danger all the way
Night's sea reflection
The faces of bodies slain"
This song just makes you want to punch someone.
4)Rainbow - Run with the Wolf
Dio, is perhaps the shortest and most evil of all metal singers and he brings it with his werewolf themed little ditty.
"There's a hole in the sky
Something evil's passing by
What's to come - when the siren calls you go
To run with the wolf"
I guess in this world Werewolves are called up from the ocean by sirens, because wolves are sea creatures, right? Maybe, this song is about Merwolves and by running Dio means swimming? He does reference the sea again:
"There's a break in the ground
Like the swirling water's angry as they pull you down"
Yeah, must be Merwolves...
5)Merciful Fate - Into the Coven
The King shows us that all things evil begin with the call of the Wolf:
"Howl like a wolf
And a witch will open the door
Follow me and meet our High Priestess
Come, come into my Coven
And become Lucifer's Child"
Listen to that high pitched metal howl - I keep waiting for the some wolves to show up at my door at the call of the The King. Sadly, all that turned up after repeated listings at high volume were my terrified neighbors wondering why a little girl was screaming in my apartment...
6) Type-O Negative - Wolf Moon
Erm, this song appears to be about a werewolf getting its "red wings."
"The 28th day
She'll be bleeding again
And in lupine ways
We'll alleviate the pain
Unholy water
Sanguine addiction
Those silver bullets
A last blood benediction
It is her moon time
When there's iron in the air
A rusted essence

I guess menstrual blood is metal...
