As we continue the short story unit, and continue to rear more and more, the story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner definitely struck me as a little strange. However, a lot of writings from the gothic time period are that way. But “A Rose for Emily” is one of the stranger pieces of literature that I have read thus far into the semester, and probably even up to this point in any english class. It is very odd to me that a women would be so compelled to keep someone for her self that she would keep a dead body in her home. Not only that but would kill the man herself and lay next to the corpse in the same bed. That being said I definitely enjoyed the short story and the fact that we read something from the Gothic time period. I do believe that I read this short story in an english class sometime in high school. That being said when I read it in the past I had no idea what was going on beyond what the reader told us explicitly. By rereading it this semester I was able to gain a deeper understanding of William Faulkner's short story, and it was much more enjoyable this time around. Its amazing what you can discover by reading something a second or third time, most of the time it can be things that are very simple and you just overlooked. However, they can play an important role and lead to a whole new understanding of the story.
