Love and Other Catastrophes: A Mix Tape

While we are still focusing on poetry I have begun to enjoy it a little more than I had in the past. We have read and had class discussions about many different pieces of poetry and seen many different styles of poetry. However, this week we read something that was quite a bit different than the usual writing style that I have grown accustomed to seeing. Love and Other Catastrophes: a Mix Tape” by Amanda Holzer was something completely different and very creative. The actual theme of the poem is not the interesting or creative part. It is basically just two people meeting, falling in love, and breaking up. However how the poem is written I thought was very unique. Rather than just writing something down in a conventional way, the author used song titles. Amanda Holzer used song titles in a calculated way so that when read they would tell a story. Maybe its just me but I do not see this as poetry, at least in the traditional sense. Regardless I thought it was very unique, creative, and I definitely enjoyed reading it. Probably my favorite piece we have read thus far.
