This week we began the unit of poetry, and if I am honest that is by far my least favorite subject to study. I have never been very good at it, mostly because it is difficult for me to understand exactly what the author is trying to convey. However, this time I hoped it would be different, and it was. With the poetry unit beginning I hope that I can do better than I have in my past english classes. We began the unit with the poem Ode on a Grecian Urn written by John Keats. The idea of this poem is that these scenes that have been depicted on the grecian urn will be there forever. Not only that, but the feelings that those illustrated are feeling will remain forever. They have no concept of time, and they are frozen at one point. For example, the boy playing music under the tree will remain happy and in love with the women next to him for all of eternity as the urn is passed down generation to generation. The boy will never know anything other than what he feels in that very moment. He will never know anything buyt happiness and joy. Analyzing poetry has never been my strong suit and I am hoping that will change. I look forward to reading and discussing future poems in class. It is my goal to get better at interpreting and understanding the deeper meanings that the author is trying to convey to the reader.
