first bike ride of the season

Mar 31, 2007 08:13

so a couple of weeks ago i got my first road bike. i got it off of craigslist for crazy cheap... original is 1000 and i got it for 100. it's in perfect shape and looks like it could be out of the store new.

joe gave madeleine his old bike a while ago. his first road bike was inherited and way too small for him. he road it for a couple of years before he got his cannondale. it is actually madeleine's size. so the three of us went out for a nice 13 mile ride after work.

i had never ridden a road bike for longer than a mile or so before in my life. holy crap! what a difference to mountain biking. with a mountain bike the fastest i'd ever ridden was 23 mph. i was going downhill with the bike in the lowest gear possible and pedaling my ass off. yesterday at one point we just coasted downhill (not a mountain, but just a small hill) and we got up to 22 mph. the things are crazy fast. the fastest that i got up to, on a similar hill going downhill, was 32 mph. that's NUTS!!! that's how fast cars are allowed to go on most roads. the coolest thing about roadbiking is the speed that you get with almost no effort.

if you haven't tried it i highly recommend it. oh. and it was almost 40 yesterday. spring is here. the snow is melting, most of the roads are now lakes and the sun isn't setting till almost 9pm. go away snow. common' summer!

we didn't take the camera, but this is an approximation of what the sunset looks like setting while riding along turnagain arm (this is earlier in the year or much later at night... we had much more light). i'll also put up a small map to show you where this is.

anchorage is not on the map, but is north of where the road starts on this map. here is a more zoomed out view.

we road from indian to girdwood. some of the most beautiful views of the area. i've been there probably 15 times and i never get sick of it.
