In a netcafe at the moment, train ticket booked, leaving to kunming from chengdu in 2hrs...
I have started my trek south, I have booked a plane ticket leaving from singapore to perth on the 17th of dec, the rest of my journey is going to be a tad rushed (kunming->hanoi,vietnam->laos->cambodia->thailand->malaysia->singapore; all via land) - starting to wonder how I am going to get back into normal life when I get back home... not sure if I'm ready :(
anyhow, I'll talk about chengdu...
Chengdu is similar to most other inland china cities, bar:
- there seems to be a perminent traffic jam in the centre of the city, even today when I walked to the train station at 10am
- theres no decent street food, bar the awesomely tasty chilli shishkebabs that the muslim street vendors cook, although no substantial cheap meals
- all the taxi drivers drive like rally car drivers, even if the road isnt too busy they seem convinced that they have to get me from one end of the city to the other in under 10min, this was the only time I felt compelled to put myu seatbelt on in china
- its bloody cold, cant wait to see those vietnamese beaches...
- there are a lot of nice youth hostels, and considering the city has just reached off season, I could get some really nice accomodation for 10Y/night ($2aust) with a pool table and free net
- the food has heaps of chillis and some green seed which numbs your mouth, acts as a natural anesthetic, which they seem to add with all chilli foods; it gave me a bit of a high after eating a specified 'hot' meal
- it has pandas
The pandas are way cute, however technically they should have been extinct centuries ago, in my opinion it is their cuteness which has helped them survive for this long.
They have an insanely low sex drive, they are fat and lazy; incapable of defending themselves, they give birth to tiny babies; almost fetuses, which require a great deal of human support for them to survive.
During a vist to the panda museum inside the panda sanctuary, I noticed that ancient chinese people used to look after the pandas, even back then they required assistance; I'm pretty certain it is their cuteness which was a deciding factor.
I checked out the world's largest sitting buddha yesterday, in lesha. The buddha has been carved into the side of a cliff, rather epic. pics will be up soon, front USB ports on this comp dont seem to be working.
I hate this shitty keyboard, the keys keep sticking
that'll do for now
