Marlene had had plenty of time to think by being home so much. Tifa usually stayed home, but was gone sometimes. She usually went with her. Although she usually went, she sometimes wanted to stay home with Denzel. She could see his sickness getting worse by the day and didn’t want to leave his side.
With all this extra time to think, many questions about many different things began arising in Marlene’s mind. She had some about the Lifestream, some about the SOLDIERs, about geostigma and lots about Cloud, his whereabouts and several other things. The ones about Cloud always intrigued her the most.
Tifa, thankfully, was home at that moment. Marlene’s curiosity was getting the best of her. She wanted, no, needed some answers. She sighed and cautiously walked into the Seventh Heaven, where Tifa was sitting at the counter looking particularly pensive. Maybe she’s thinking about Cloud too? The little girl thought, walking up to her silently. She gave her arm a sharp tug, snapping her back to reality. Tifa looked from side to side, then down at Marlene. She smiled and sighed. “Yes?” she chuckled.
“Tifa… can I ask you some things?” she asked, looking up at the older woman with large, questioning eyes.
Tifa smiled and nodded. She kneeled down to the little girl’s height and said, “Sure. What about?”
Marlene wrung her hands together, shuffling her feet a bit, “It’s about Cloud,” she blinked those large, hazel eyes innocently, “Tifa… why does Cloud live in a church?”
Needless to say, the older woman was caught a bit off-guard by this question. “…Why does Cloud… live in… a church?” she repeated, blinking furiously. Marlene nodded intently. “Why does Cloud live in a church…” Tifa sighed, scratching her head in confusion. Why did Cloud live in a church? She wanted to give Marlene an answer so she didn’t think that the blond hero just abandoned them, so she decided on: “Well, Marlene… it’s because Cloud’s catholic,” and ended with a bright smile.
Marlene didn’t exactly understand. She knew what Catholicism was, but Cloud? Catholic? It didn’t exactly add up… Tifa had stood up by then and was heading over to the other side of the counter again. “Does that mean you can’t have sex until you two are married?”
Tifa froze and choked, spluttering indignantly. She tried to remind herself that Marlene was only a child and didn’t know what she was talking about, but… “Marlene!” she squeaked, face turning bright red, “I-I don’t think that’s an appropriate topic to discuss, honey!” she laughed nervously, turning around on her heels and looked at the little girl.
“Or… is he becoming a priest and swearing himself to a life a chastity?” Marlene blinked, cocking her head to one side naively.
Tifa groaned.
