Despite the fact that heavy metal is my love, I'm going to tell you about my guilty musical pleasure. It's like chocolate ice-cream with fudge and sprinkles. It's like a book that you know has absolutely no literary merit, yet you can't put down.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me present to you: Eurovision!
For those of you who haven't heard of it, Eurovision is a festival where most of Europe's countries compete, preforming musical numbers. "Wait," you may say, "Why is this a guilty pleasure? It sounds pretty legit."
No no. Eurovision isn't really based on musical talent. There's national rivalry, showmanship, strange songs and stranger costumes. Don't believe me?
These guys (yes, they were dressed in monster suits) won in 2006. Yes, that's the kind of event it is.
The entries for the semi-finals are posted, and I'm going to nominate a few of my favourites in different (entirely arbitrary and made-up) categories.
Category 1: Happy, Bouncy People

Maybe I'm biased because I like songs in Finnish, or maybe it's the accordion playing that makes it, but I'm enjoying this song. It's cheerful, it's sweet and the performers look like they're having a good time.
Category 2: They're Having So Much Fun

Alright guys, let's be honest. Belarus isn't going to win, but I sort of wish they could. This group of people is so into their performance (red costumes from the sixties notwithstanding), and their song is more than a little catchy.
Category 3: Most Over-the-Top Costume

Why the tree costumes? Why? I understand that nature is being sung about, but this just looks like Lord of the Rings gone a little strange. That said, the song is quite sweet.
Category 4: Awesome Lady is Awesome

Hera Bjork has my approval. She has a nice voice and so much charisma. Her audience loves her too, so that's always a plus.
Category 5: Mandatory Ukraine Love

I speak Ukrainian, I know plenty of Ukrainian songs, I can even do some Ukrainian folk dancing in a pinch. Therefore, I must support Ukraine, even if the singer is crooning a love song, just like so many others this year. Be more over-the-top, please.
