Dear god the weather has been terrible today. Absolutely pissing it down. My and my brother made butterfly cakes (from a packet, I tried to convince him to make it from scratch but he didn't want to *shrugs* some people) and then spent the afternoon playing Guitar Hero. I suck. A bit. Ok a lot. Onwards to:
• Day 15 - A character who you can relate to the most
I'm not really sure I particularly relate to anyone in films. Not many 21-year-old female computer scientist geeks around. At least not ones that don't conform to every sterotype going. So my pick is... cheating a little I guess. I mean, the character is *in* films. But a) not originally and b) the films that you'll all think of I refuse to watch because, no and I haven't seen the one made in the 40s. But I think this is the character I relate to most. That is:
Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice)
Ok so I'm slightly cheating there as that is a picture of Jennifer Ehle from the 1995 BBC version, but I refuse to acknowledge Ms Sticky McStickerson (otherwise known as Kiera Knightly) as Elizabeth.
Nothing (well not much) against her, just really don't like the film (and no I haven't seen it, but as I was active in P&P fandom (and yes, they have one) at the time it came out, I know enough of the details to make me dislike it)
Anyway, back to the whole character I relate to thing. I know, I know, it sounds odd, out of all the characters in everything ever, I feel I can relate to a member of the minor Regency gentry? Well yes. Strip away the details of the period and look at Lizzie's essential character and what do you have? And intelligent young woman who knows her own mind, refuses to conform the society's expectations of how she should act and decides how she wants to live her life based on what she wants and will make her happy, not what everyone else thinks she should want. She also stands up for herself and her principles and won't be cowed by her "betters."
As a 21-year-old female computer scientist geek, I can relate. Boy howdy can I relate. I've spend most of my life refusing to conform to society's expectations of how I should act and doing things that makes me happy not what people think I should want to do. And as for the second bit? That's what I hope to be. That's what I aspire to. I like to think I even achieve it from time to time.
So that's it really, that's why the character I can relate to most is Elizabeth Bennet.
