TV by the Numbers:  Are Angry ‘Stargate: SG1/Atlantis’ Fans Partly To Blame For Lousy ‘Stargate: Universe’ Ratings?

I love his take on it, which is summed up by saying "Executive producers and show creators can (and do) play 'Fan Excuse Bingo' too" then uses the latest Brad Wright Quote of Gold, then adds, "Bingo!" The comments are interesting, with a few of the expected "But I like it!" comments. No one says you can't like it, but there's not enough who do and have a Neilson box to make a difference. Happens with a lot of shows unfortunately. It's one reason I often don't bother watching new shows. Watching it won't make a difference, because I don't count in the ratings, but if it turns out good, then I can catch up on DVD later. I'd rather do that than get into a show and have it canceled before it can go anywhere. If it sucks, I've saved myself some time for something more entertaining.

I'm especially loving the calling out of Wright's online spews, such as his ever-so-professional comments on reviewer Mo Ryan's blog and his "We don't need you!" attitude towards the existing fanbase. He didn't need them, yet now they're the reason the current show is tanking? Yeah, right. He's got more flounce in him than a teenager and really loves pointing fingers at anyone except himself.

With the MGM financial mess, I'm not sure we'll ever get further SG-1 or SGA movies that were promised. Never really counted on it anyway. Honestly, with this same crew in charge, I'm not sure it would be worth the wait, because they'll still be pissed off their shiny new show didn't make it, so they had to slum it with the old ones. Considering most of the actors are moving on to other things too, it's going to be a lot harder to get everyone together again, and that would make it a lot easier for some bitter TPTB to just write them out completely.

I personally don't think supporting (or not) SGU will sink or swim the whole franchise. It might sink the Wright, Mallozzi, etc. version of the franchise though. It can come back, but I think it's to the point where there needs to be a change of who's driving the bus and/or a break before a new production begins. Though even that sort of change can mean fandom splits, such as there still being those who are Disciples of the Church of the First Star Trek (DCFST), The New Reformed Order where the newer texts are accepted in various denominations (except for that last episode of Enterprise, dammit), and now The Holy Order of Lensflare.

So what do you think? Will the Stargate franchise live on in some fashion? Go dormant for a while? In either case, will we still get to watch Wright have childish tantrums while we eat popcorn topped with fresh schadenfreude? I think he needs to move on. He's been showing signs of burnout for a long time now, and a break then coming back to a new, non-Stargate show might do him a lot of good. He's been working on various incarnations of the franchise for 13+ years now, and that's a hell of a long time. Some of them were good, some were not so good. My vote is it's time for a rest.
