Convention news. Literally.

CNN: Conventions: Another day at the office for celebs

An interview with Erin Gray about her career morphing from acting to representing other actors for convention appearances. There's a scary amount of talk about stalkers, but two stories turn out to have been a security guard onset and another was her mailman, not the folks following them around at cons. Though I guess they could go to cons too.

I love this bit:

But the reality is that conventions like Dragon*Con can help make or break an actor's career. We are no longer living in the age of Hollywood executives determining who the stars will be, Gray said. We are living in an age of social media, where the fans have a louder voice than ever before.

For example, Gray has one client whom Hollywood paid no attention to. So she went out on her own and started a webcast, and today has more than 1.7 million followers on Twitter. Ouch! That's gotta hurt all of those people who told Felicia Day, "don't call us; we'll call you."
justalurker  and I were just talking about whether or not the Stargate actors would be continuing to go to cons for much longer since SG-1 and SGA are canceled and the actors are moving on. I think some might want to get away from the pigeonholing of being "a sci fi actor" but I think they prefer being known as "a working actor" so they'll go to cons because they know it's an excellent promotion opportunity.

How many of us have watched shitty Skiffy movies just because an actor we like is in it? I hate snakes, yet I watched Boa vs. Python and MegaSnake to see David Hewlett and Michael Shanks. This is the formula Skiffy has been relying on for quite a while with their high quality movies. Familiar actors, retread of a crappy plot, presto, movie!

Sure, we'll have a lot of the same questions asked con after con, but the actor's new projects will be topics of discussion too. I didn't go to the actual Peter Wingfield Fan Club meeting in San Antonio, but I was hanging out a friend who did. Some of the actors from Peter's upcoming project also appeared as guests, and we were amused that the one actress in the group decided to join us crazy ladies on one of the riverwalk dinner cruises.

Oh, and Felicia Day? You are my geek heroine!
