I have to laugh at all the reviewers commenting on
Moonlight being nothing more than a retooled Angel. Seriously? I got to watch the repeat Saturday, and it's totally Forever Knight.
SyFy Portal says it did well in the ratings too, despite the critical panning.
Vampire solving crime? Check.
Vampire driving around in a convertible at night? Check.
The older vampire worried about humans finding out about them? Check.
The vampire ex? Sorta check.
I do have to say I was never much of a LaCroix girl back in the day. The slash subtext was very strong, but it just got a bit too campy. Josef isn't Nick's Mick's sire, but there's still a paternal/fraternal friendship there. And Josef is very hot. I'll be a happy fangirl if they play up the subtext there. *g*
The vampire ex is a slightly different thing. Mick's ex isn't a direct adaptation of Nick's Janette, who seduced him, but since she's apparently killed in a fire, perhaps there's a bit of Dr. Alyce Hunter, who was in the pilot episode of Forever Knight. In the original version (Nick Knight, starring Rick Springfield), she's killed in a fire, but in the version remade for the series, there's an extra scene at the end in which the audience knows she survived the fire and got her wish for immortality as a vampire. Maybe Mick's ex will be shown later to have survived all this time too.
Something I did find interesting is that Mick is relative young, only 90 years old. Technically, some of his contemporaries are still alive, though of course they don't still look like they're an adult in their 30s. Most vampire mythologies always focus on the older vampires (under 300 need not apply), and often imply the younger ones aren't as strong and/or are still too closely tied to their humanity. They may still go that route here, but I found it interesting they're focusing on a younger vampire as the protagonist.
And then there's the love interest. You all know I'm a slash whore of the first order anyway, but still... this one kinda skeeved me out a bit. Falling for the girl you saved from your psycho ex-wife 20 years ago would be bad enough, but apparently he'd been keeping an eye on her too. Feels... I dunno... part stalkery, part incestuous. Did anyone else get that vibe?
And has he not moved for 20 years, still using the same identity back then that he is now? Does he want to find out what it's like to have an angry mob after him? Or did he move around following Beth all these years?
I'm going to give it another shot, but I couldn't help but feel that it was missing an element that Forever Knight had in its favor -- a late night time slot, which added to the "cult tv" appeal, especially since people were a lot more forgiving of the low-budget vampire f/x due to the timeslot and the times.
