Any board gamers here?

I've been thinking about getting a few board games to keep at the library and have a "game night" once a week, maybe more during the summer. I've never been much of a gamer beyond the days of 1980s era arcades and Atari 2600, so I'm kind of lost. I'm also open to card games, but Cards Against Humanity is right out. Superfight has been suggested as ( Read more... )

I'd definitely recommend Ticket to Ride, especially the earlier versions like the North American one (the later versions, Africa and such, incorporate some rule variations that get pesky).

I'd vote NO on Settlers of Catan, just because it contains a million fiddly little parts that will quickly get lost. Same with Small World.

I like Dixit, Quirkles, and Tsuro.

Also, avoid Power Grid, it takes about 4 days just to learn the rules :).

That's the kind of review I'm looking for, because I do not want lots of fiddly bits, at least not to start.

There's a foundation with a grant deadline in June that is a pretty sure bet, but I've got to start cooking the idea now to get it done. They like funding programming, so this would be right up their alley. I have a vague idea of getting 3 or 4 games, as well as some STEM kits.

My thinking is the games will stay here for library game times, but the STEM kits could be checked out by teachers or parents (we've got a lot of homeschoolers in the area). Of course the STEM kits I'm looking at are on the fiddly side, but we can put in a check list and probably repackage them to make it easier to count.

LOL, it took me a second to realize you don't mean things like Trivial Pursuit or Yahtzee. Soooo not a gamer. ;)

I'm probably going to add a few old school board games too, but most of those I can probably buy at a charity shop. Already have three decks of cards, backgammon, and Chinese checkers that were acquired through donations.

Resistance: Avalon is a fun game that is not too hard to learn and can have lots of players. It doesn't take too long to play, and the Arthurian stuff makes it more fun too but the game itself is actually fun and interesting.

King of Tokyo is also really fun.

I'm adding everything to my list to see how a budget would work out when I work up the proposal. Thanks for the suggestions!

If you don't want the profanity of Cards Against Humanity (which is half the joy ;-), Apples to Apples is much more general audience friendly and still fun.

The kids are aware of CAH, but even they say they couldn't get away with it in a public place. I've found a few alternates, and I'll add this one too.

I'm not a big board game player, but I like Ticket To Ride and Lanterns. They're easy and not too long to play. I don't like games that take forever.

Settlers of Catan has real problems: if you play with three people, there's a serious advantage for one color over another and a slight advantage for the second color over the third.

I've never had much opportunity, being an only child living in a rural area with no kids within walking distance. Played a few at family gatherings, but they're nothing like the modern games.

I knew the Hive Mind would have some good insight into the games out there now. :)
