I read too much fanfic

I think I've already admitted here that I'm addicted to Investigation Discovery, which is a true crime channel. It started as a background noise that would remain relatively steady when I was dealing with migraines, now it's also background noise when there's nothing else on ( Read more... )

Hell, hasn't she ever heard of autoerotic asphyxiation and learned that that is a thing? Aa and breath play gone wrong are both common enough, and end up in the legal system enough, that she should be aware.

On the show, she goes into explaining autoerotic asphyxiation, but still has an air of not believing it's a normal (slightly kinky) thing.

I think she was so focused on tearing apart the suspect's story that she was not only unwilling to believe in "breath play gone wrong" but that breath play was a thing at all.

I did believe he did it and was concocting a story to cover his guilt by saying it was an accident, but the woman looked a fool by not knowing or accepting it could have been reality. The problem with his story is he did not seek help, take her to an ER, etc. He just dumped her bound body and went about his business as if nothing happened.

No idea. I think she's a true crime writer, but still, you think she'd have heard of such things if she follows crime stories.

I think it was an attempt to play up the outrage and just made her look stupid.

My cable company JUST got this channel. I saw that episode where they mentioned breath play. That's a very interesting channel.

I love the channel. If I just want some background noise on, it's perfect. Then sometimes they have a really interesting one on and I get sucked in.

I'd never heard of breath play until this post, never even heard the term before, and I've watched a lot of cop shows and read a lot of fanfic. [I asked my daughter as she was leaving for work, and she'd never heard of it either.) I also haven't looked it up, but I think I have guessed what it is. I have heard of autoerotic asphyxiation, though. toolman's stepbrother died from that back in the early 1980s. I'd also heard of teenagers doing that, and probably heard it mentioned on the random cop show, but that's about it.

OTOH, I'm not a law enforcement officer, and I probably am pretty sheltered IRL outside of my viewing habits and my reading. :)

Breath play is the same thing as autoerotic asphyxiation in a sense. It's just that it's not just one person like autoerotic. Though I guess breath play could be used to refer to that as well, but in fic it's usually 2+ people involved.

I see it in headers sometimes, but it's not my kink. I've been too close to the euphoria state they're seeking due to medical reasons, and it's not fun if it's out of control. It's just too risky, especially autoerotic because there's no one to help if you do pass out. But for those who do have it as a kink, that's part of the rush.
