For the insurance, also don't take for granted that the best rate you have "now" will be true when it renews. If you find that your rate jumps on renewal for no obvious reason (e.g. accidents, losing demerit points, other claims) it's worth checking the competing rates.

I've had three different insurers since I got my car. In both cases where I switched, it's because the new insurer became significantly cheaper for reasons that had nothing to do with my driving or claim record.

In my most recent switch (a few years ago), the renewal for the previous insurer showed my impending rates for the following year were going to be about 200$ higher. I found another insurer with slightly better coverage that was $100 less than my previous rate (so saving 300$ total). When I mentioned this as weird while setting up the new insurance with the new insurer, they explained it could be something like the old insurer having increased the rates because of paying out too many claims in my neighbourhood/postal code - nothing to do with me!

Apart from insurance brokers, you may also want to check for discounts related to things like clubs, alumni associations or union membership. We're different unions, but for a while (until I didnt) , I had an excellent insurance rate through the insurer that was affiliated with PIPSC.

Very good info I wouldn't have known, thank you! As for discounts, while I'm supposed to have a preferential rate with the PSAC company that won't stop sending "join us" literature despite years of not using them, I will check my rental insurance company to see if a package would help there.
