making history.

Barack Obama was just elected president. A huge milestone in American history. We are headed towards greater times. Towards unimaginable triumphs. And towards undeniable struggle. Finally, proof has risen that socioeconomic boundaries can be overcome through education. And yet so much ignorance still plagues our nation. Jokes about assassination have already surfaced, as if anyone with half a brain cell would consider such delusions entertaining. I am amazed at my country's ability to ascend beyond racial prejudice and hatred, and dumbfounded by a simultaneous persistance of ignorance here.

While the underrepresented and marginilized African American community celebrates a profound victory tonight, the members of the LGBTR community continue to face impervious acts of discrimination. I hope California does not let me down by passing Prop 8. That will be a sad day in history, and almost entirely diminish the victories that one community has made by denying rights and restricting expressions of love for another.

I am proud to say that I voted in the 2008 General Election, and I am proud to say that unlike past years, many others did the same. With one of the largest turnouts in voting history, this year was bound to be a year of epic political proportions. Just the fact that a black man, AND a woman, were in the same presidential election is profound, and I would have been happy with the progress either way. But I am gravely disappointed that Prop 8 and Prop 4, two legislative acts that largely restrict the freedoms of two underserved communities, are gaining such momentous support.

I am also extremely disappointed that still, in this supposedly "revolutionary" time we live in, we are still only given two realistic candidate choices for president. I can think of so many other people that would be fine presidential candidates, and yet none of them would ever make it to the finish line. The idea that anyone can be president is a bold-faced lie, and anyone who states otherwise is naive.

I hope that Barack Obama will change this. I hope he will at least contribute to the breaking down of barriers, as this election has so furvently initiated. I hope he will help make this world a better place, and I hope close-minded people find it within themselves to follow suit.
