Of all the places, I caught a sixer of "Wild Blue" at a Winn Dixie supermarket. Surprisingly, I've not seen this specialty beer available in either Whole Foods or liquor stores with true beer cellars (fine print being that cellars are nearly non-existent in Florida, so I mean a chilled back room filled with beer). Sporting a cheeky label featuring a Bull Dog kicking a blueberry, Blue Dawg Brewing's; out of Baldwinsville, New York; "Wild Blue" offers an intensely sweet smell upon cracking open the cap. The nose detects -- blueberries, what else? The scent is actually on the verge of overkill sweet, like the blueberry syrup available at most IHops. This homage to sweetness carries with the beer's flavor, which initiates a seemingly sucrose-filled initial punch that is rapidly followed by a taste of blueberry. This all fades into an almost champagne-like sensation that is deceptively light.
"Wild Blue" is a unique beer. At 8% alcohol by volume, it certainly packs a respectable punch (for beer), but the flavor is surprisingly mild. It's almost as sweet as some poppy kid beverages, like Smirnoffs sold in supermarkets, yet the fact that the brew is fully natural lends an air of subtle sophistication to the drink. When wanting for a cold one, I'd not reach for Wild Blue outright, owing to the fact that it simply doesn't taste like a beer. That said, it is a nice break in flavor and will certainly please beer novices or those hardcore beer fans seeking something to go great with dessert. Look for this unique beer and give it a try!
