Good Stuff in NYC this week-end for the Bi, Pan, Fluid, Whatever Crowd

Jun 05, 2008 18:57

Tonight June 5th from 6 to 8 pm BiRequest, the long-running Thursday evening social and discussion group will covering one of THE hot topics in our circles, "Bisexual . . . What's in a name?".

The question on the table will be: Ever wonder why some who are not monosexual ( i.e. neither homosexual nor heterosexual) resist the label bisexual? Let's talk about the history of bisexuality, and the benefits and drawbacks of identifying as (or being identified as) bisexual.

o    Does the "Bi" in bisexuality reinforce the idea that there are only 2 sexes and therefore only 2 genders?
o    Does having a label for non-monosexuals only result in creating third exclusive category?
o    Do we need a more inclusive label or no label at all?
o    Does a single label imply that one's sexual preferences is fixed?
o    What are the political and social ramifications of "No label"?
o    What are the benefits or drawbacks of publicly claiming a bisexual identity, even if you don't think it adequately suits your sexual identity or if you don't think it should matter who you are attracted to?

Meet up to discus at NYC's LGBT Community Center located at 208 West 13th Street (between 7th & 8th) in the West Village. Running late? Meet up with them at "eight-fifteenish" for dinner at Empire Szechuan 173 7th Avenue South (at Perry Street, one block south of 11th Street).

On Friday night June 6th book on over to NYC's big LGBT Movie Festival NewFest to see Bi the Way being screened at 5:45 at the AMC Loews 34th Street Theater (312 W 34th St. at 8th Ave).

On Saturday, June 7 from noon to 8 pm get out to the 4th Annual Staten Island LGBT Pride Parade & Festival. The parade begins at the St. George Municipal Parking Field just steps from the SI Ferry Terminal and proceeding (legally) UP THE SIDEWALK on the streets of St. George, past the new Staten Island LGBT Community Center at the corner of Victory Blvd. and Bay Street, as well as other government buildings and the businesses of Downtown Staten Island, and culminate with a weatherproof festival inside Cromwell Center. The Festival (click here for flyer - pdf) will begin following the Parade at the Cromwell Recreation Center in Tompkinsville Pier 6 at Hannah St. (one block east of the new Staten Island LGBT Community Center located at the intersection of Bay St. & Victory Blvd).

This year the Staten Island LGBT Community is both celebrating the opening of their new LGBT Center and having "issues" with the power-that-be over their Pride Parade so the more that can show up to party with them the merrier and the better.

or you can

Take a day trip over to our neighboring state and join the members of Con-Bi_Nation at the 2008 Connecticut PRIDE Rally and Festival being held at beautiful Elizabeth Park located on Prospect Avenue in West Hartford, Connecticut.

On Sunday June 8th hop on the LIRR and join the members of Getting Bi at the 18th Annual Long Island Pride Parade and Festival will be held along Main Street in Huntington Village. The Festival in the Park which takes place in Huntington's Heckscher Park is the crown jewel of LI's Pride Day Celebration. This is one of the largest parades outside of New York City in New York State attracting according to public estimates 5,000 spectators in 2007. So get there early to get a good spot.

And by the time you get back from that you can finally collapse and relax, get some rest and gather your strength for all the great stuff that will be happening next week!
