our turn now

Really, I was just going to post some more DH rambling but then I flicked on the TV-

And now I'm sitting here watching the CNN/Youtube debate, and it's got to be some sort of heavenly irony that the first twenty minutes were dedicated to the themes to racism and bureaucracy.

All I'm saying is that while the Potter fandom is once again busy griping and whining itself into oblivion because noes, your ship died (and let it be known that I'm still mourning Tonks and Remus), the world is crumbling apart at the seems. On our watch. And it's exactly the themes that are so prominent in those books we fell in love with that are driving us apart. Race, and blood; oligarchy and the political elite, corruption- did you really read these books with your eyes closed? One person's Death Eater is another person's freedom fighter, afterall, but people- we don't have a Chosen One. It doesn't work that way.

People are dying in Darfur in a way that makes Bellatrix look like Dora the Explorer.

And look a little closer to home. Look at schools that don't need the Carrows and the Cruciatus curse to become hell.

And how can a kid be mistreated and hid in a cupboard under the stairs for eleven years, and what if they never get their Hogwarts letter?

All I'm saying is, it's over. I'm never going to stop loving these characters, I'm going to bully my kids into reading these books, I can't wait for the shock to be over so I can delve into the brilliance of construction and imagery that is this book. I'm never going to stop loving this; and I'm not going to stop writing fanfic anytime soon. It was never about being right for me; it was never about analyzing. It was about finding a place where I can play with words. And much more importantly, it's about the people. It's about you guys. It's about finding some of the dearest friends, some of the people closest to my heart. And even if I had hated the way DH played out, I would have never stopped being grateful. And I won't, ever, stop being grateful that I met you guys.

But it's over. The friendships and the memories we take with us, those aren't over, but the books are over, and Harry's done his part, and he deserves that nap and that sandwich and doing nothing else but teaching his kids two-aside Quidditch if that's what he wants to do.

We don't have that right just yet. So find a cause you believe in, find a DA to join, an Umbridge to fight, an Order of the Phoenix. Use the brilliance and wit and brain and compassion that you all have, and for the love of god, get a life.

We owe that to them, don't we? To Tonks and Lupin, and little Teddy. To Colin and Lavender. To Mad-Eye, to Dorcas Meadows and Amelia, to the Prewetts, to Lily and James and Sirius, to the McKinnons and to the fifty faceless bodies in the Great Hall. And most of all, we owe it to JKR, that once the hype and the press coverage and the wank dies- that the ideas that she hit us over the head with, again and again and again, that Hermione's the smartest person in the world and her parents are dentists, and that the weapon we have is love- we owe her. Don't you think?

Am leaving this unflocked for a reason. If you think I have a point, by all means link or pimp.
