Really interesting discussion of the practice in the UK of paying authors royalties of books taken out of libraries. I haven't read the comments since yesterday, but I'm surprised that no one has brought up the old privacy bugbear as another reason it wouldn't fly ( Read more... )

They haven't because there is a big huge difference between knowing what books are taken out and knowing who takes the books out. <3 Librarians know what books are taken out and how often; it's where we get our circulation statistics from!

Aha! And there we go -- that would make sense. All I had in mind was nefarious Patriot Act stuff that I'm pretty sure I'm not remembering correctly anyway.
