Really interesting discussion of the practice in the UK of paying authors royalties of books taken out of libraries. I haven't read the comments since yesterday, but I'm surprised that no one has brought up the old privacy bugbear as another reason it wouldn't fly in the United States. (I know I have actual librarians on my friendslist, and my sadly limited exposure to this discourse is all from my ill-fated attempts to work for the ALA, but it is interesting, and one reason I loved the idea of working for the ALA was how subversive and stubborn they are about free speech and universal access to information.)
