Yuletide is somehow this embarrassment of riches this year. Why do so many of us have multiple fills? Did everybody default? Were there that many people writing treats? I'm overwhelmed! And delighted. I haven't touched the archive yet, and may not for several days, but I did get two phenomenal stories this year, and you all should read them and enjoy them and tell the writers they're great.
Rat Queens:
"Sugar Cookies and Hot Tea"Just what I was looking for: Dee and how she deals with the other girls, namely by keeping an eye on Betty and, ultimately, getting a shitton of cuddles. Awesome voice, totally believable scenario, irreverent and loving as hell -- the things you love about the comics, basically.Defeating the marauding gang of werelizards would have been easy enough if their two type A badasses hadn’t vehemently disagreed on their strategy. Hannah was obviously pissed over something her mother had said on their last purple lightning phone chat and not talking about it. And Vi, bless her bloody fucked up heart, could not for the life of her resist mouthing back at Hannah’s obvious projecting. And Bilford Bogin, but it gave Dee a fucking headache.
The Arrival:
"Chasing After Gold"Ohmygosh, a gorgeous short story that says so, so much with very little speech at all. Just like the comic, it speaks in pictures and movements. Beautiful prose, beautiful imagery, wonderful character work, particularly given the anonymity of the characters. There are traces of those who came before him, other faceless, nameless people who looked for light; they are the ones who left the path from which the darkness hides. He doesn't see them; he can't know who they are, for they have moved on, perhaps inland, to the fields and the realm of endless sand, or spread out along the coast, making room for him to take their place. What they left for him, though, is enough; he knows he isn't alone, isn't the first. Not even the people he sailed with are known to him, they slept shoulder to shoulder under blankets, and as if to make up for the closeness, they parted on the dock and never looked back. Some of them had places to go; he is filling a space made for him by someone who moved on, doing the very thing he himself is aiming to do.
♥ Hope everyone's having a good day. I slept until I woke up -- bliss -- and have spent the day... cleaning. It's been great. I've gotten through a bunch of podcasts and I've been snacking like a champ. Lots of love, gang.
