Am I brave enough?

I've been chewing on this essay for about five weeks now, and it's finally live at
screwballheroine! So I wrote this thing about fear, monsters and baring it all: Baby's first burlesque show. One note I have gotten in more than feedback session, whether it's journalism or fiction, is that my readers need more of a personal connection to the emotions of the characters. That... is hard to do if you never face your own fear of vulnerability, which, I'd like to add, is not without cause.

If you feel like sharing, on Twitter or FB or wherever, please do. I think it's considered weird, in the context of a closed system like LJ/DW, to invite the larger world in, for the most part, but that's what
screwballheroine is for. I totally welcome comments and conversation too!

Some other personal essays that have moved me, particularly in comics form:
  • Life Is an Ambush by Leela Corman, whose other work I really love. Heads up, this is incredibly heavy and deals with her birth experience.
  • Train Ride by Sarah Joy Shockley is much less intense; it starts off being about overwhelm and cities, and then it zooms out to consider what cities mean about aloneness, and ends on a really lovely, uplifting note.
  • And from the New York Times, a guide to thinking about composing personal essays!
