The publishing industry is full of people who can tell "good" writing from "bad" writing, the definitions of which contain a certain degree of subjectivity but not endless subjectivity. Most people can tell Fitzgerald from fan fiction, and people within the industry can get very granular. [source]
Man, this is a stupid and hopeless fight to pick in this venue, and I won't, but sometimes I wish my contribution to the world's discourse could be to make non-fandom people understand that "better than literature" and "fanworks" aren't mutually exclusive, and that Fitzgerald versus fic is a really useless false dichotomy.
