Hey everybody!
Sorry for the tardiness of this post. Busy, busy day. Anyway, I hope you have enjoyed your week so far. As some of you know, I saw a great band on Monday night that I've been raving about for the last week or so to friends and family, most recently, my father, whose a tough critic. At any rate, these guys are a lot of fun and I actually had the pleasure of meeting them. Again, I liked to thank the wonderful
gracepoetic, for turning me on to them.
Without further ado, Antennas Up
The band from Kansas City, Missouri, are a trio of musicians that fused together old school funk with new school synch-pop, creating catchy beats and humorous lyrics. I found myself bouncing to the songs instantly and laughing through most of the album. For me, som of the most great music is something you can shake your booty to and actually laugh at the same time, turning ironies into catchy hooks. Another thing that got me was the guys appearance. While their music sounds like something you might here The Roots or Gym Class Heroes put out, they look more like Dan Deacon's cousins. Regardless of the lackluster presence, the music speaks for itself, with clear influences from Stevie Wonder.
I got the chance to talk with them for a few minutes, not really an interview, but just person-to-person. What I liked most about this band is that they seemed approachable. I don't get as intimidated with bands as I used to be when I first started going to lounge acts or concerts, having met a few, but I have always been a little wary of certain bands that tend to keep to themselves. Although I respect them and hold no grudges about them keeping their distance, I always enjoy seeing musicians mingling in the crowd, getting to know their audience. And I'm not talking about these posers who pull any hot chicks backstage with them. I mean actually sitting down and talking to the people and being personable. I think that is what I like most about small acts. They're still getting into their own and trying to decipher where they fit in and how to approach their fans. Anyway, I really enjoyed just talking to someone who's really out there, day to day, having been with someone who is an inspiring musician as well, we had plenty to talk about.
Now, back to the music. They have one album that was released back in March of this year. Most notable are the songs Don't Wait Up and Agree to Disagree. The latter being my personal favorite. I think what I enjoy most about this band and that is purely fun. They're not trying to save the world with their music. They just want to have a laugh, which I think is better than the next protest song that comes along.
Choice Tracks: Don't Wait Up, Agree to Disagree and She's Evil
