Well, having heard about Matt Smith leaving at the end of the season, I am, of course, horribly sad, if not too surprised. (And the Christmas special will be his last, no less! Seriously, do they have to ruin Christmas for all us poor little fans?) I really, really love Eleven. I think he may, in fact, be the one I always remember as my Doctor. Eccleston was great, and got me into the show, but he left so soon, and then Tennant I hated so much I almost gave up the show at a few points, but then Matt came along, and it was magic. SO. MUCH. FUN. He was the first one that I loved that we really got to know. I was so afraid when I heard they were casting a 26 year old, but the minute he popped out of that blue box in Amy's back yard, that was it. Love. This guy IS the Doctor. Matt has this wonderful quality of being ageless that's just perfect for Doctor Who; he can run around and be like a goofy, gleeful kid in the candy store of the universe, and then next minute, in a quiet scene, you can see an old man, with lifetimes of sorrow and regret looking out from his eyes, and it breaks your heart. It's so amazing, I just can't even describe how much love I have for this Doctor. I WILL MISS MATT SMITH!!! BEST DOCTOR EVER. SO THERE.
Quite honestly, I would be totally cool with this if it meant that Steven Moffatt would be leaving as well, but somehow I fear not. Moffatt's such a fangeek, he'll never give it up. I really wish he'd leave though, since the episodes he writes have been getting progressively less amazing over the years, and because his annoying Mary Sue seems to be popping up more and more often and ruining otherwise decent episodes. Seriously, how long do we have to put up with River Song? They've got to get a new head writer in there to WRITE HER OUT. If I wanted to spend lots of quality time with an annoying Mary Sue, I could just go read, oh say, maybe, every bad fanfic written by 13 year olds that the internet can contain, couldn't I? We don't need that nonsense on the actual show. I think it's time to get someone new in there, particularly since a change-of-Doctor is a great time to wipe the slate clean and retire some of the Doctor's old friends. But as far as I can see, Moffatt will stay forever, and Mary Sue Song will live to plague this next Doctor. *cries* At least Clara's staying though. Yay for that, at least.
So, since the question of the hour is always "Who will the next Doctor be?", I've got a few names I'd like to throw out there. Not predictions or anything, just a wish list of possibilities.
JJ Field - he's got all the qualities a good Doctor needs, likeable, funny, a little mischievious, and I think he could handle the hero stuff too with real sincerity, and without seeming too high and mighty, which is very important for the Doctor in my opinion, since I hate the ones who are really imperious. He's a bit on the youngish side I suppose, but he's older than Matt Smith and not so good looking that it would be like pretty boy Doctor.
Aidan McCardle - he's been quietly doing good work in lots of different types of supporting roles over the years, I think he could carry a show of his own, and something quirky like Doctor Who would be a good chance for him to show what he could do, since he isn't so much the usual 'tall handsome leading man' type. He's not old or unattractive by any means, but it would be nice not to have really sexy young Doctors become a thing. It was okay for Matt because he inhabited the character so well, but let him be the exception rather than the rule, yeah?
Anna Maddeley - they mentioned that a female Doctor was a possibility, and if they do go that way, they NEED to cast Anna Maddeley. She has an authoritative quality that the Doctor needs, but can also do outright comedy, and is just tops at doing the whole 'I know I'm more awesome than everyone here, but it hasn't gone to my head' kind of character without being at all snotty or obnoxious. Also, I could see her Doctor having good chemistry with Clara, and the whole two women thing could take on kinda more of a mentor and student quality that would be interesting to see develop. It would definitely be different from previous years.
Okay, those were my actual possibility choices, but for just plain 'it'll never happen, but wouldn't it be great?' choices:
Michael Sheen - I would love to see what Michael Sheen would do with the Doctor. He's been one of my favorite actors for years because of the way he just totally becomes someone different for each role, even if he's in a bad movie, he goes for it 100% and totally sells it. I don't think he's ever been less than awesome in anything. He's a movie actor though, and would surely never do a TV series, but one can only imagine!
Stephen Fry - Come on, wouldn't Stephen Fry make an awesome Doctor? Wouldn't he be hilarious and brilliant and awesome? He's never going to be the lead in an action-oriented show, I know, but he should at least come and write an episode like he was apparently supposed to do a few years back. What has he been up to? And did House ever end? Because Hugh & Stephen need to get back together and do something funny. Not necessarily to do with DW, but I'm just sayin'!
Okay, enough fangirling! I'm still tired from being out all day yesterday with my Civil War reenacting group (yes, corsets and head-to-toe dresses are hot in summer!), so it's off to get some rest I go.
